I should temper this by saying Putin's invasion of Ukraine - after years of having done likewise in Eastern Europe - is a pretty stark failure of American and European diplomacy, too.

 

I don't know if we could. Putin didn't know it, and wouldn't believe it for quite a while after the Ukrainians started kicking the hell out of the Russian army.

I think the US knew how Russia's military stacked up against it's own. The question was how would it stack up against Ukraine. So overestimating capabilities is not a failure of intelligence. We were right that Ukraine would need support. And there are many layers to offering support that can't be ignored or shortcutted. The US can't go at this alone and needed to get NATO involved because it's European NATO's neck on the line not ours. There are competing interests we have to navigate. The fact we have gotten as much as we have as quickly as we have is a testament to what we have been able to do.

And I said you wanted troops on the ground not advocated for. The distinction is in your demands we do more there was an implication the only way to push Russia back is boots on the ground. So I less suggesting you advocated and more inferred it.
