The Herald-Sun has hired Brooke Pryor, who was with Carolina Blue, but to cover North Carolina Central. It apparently is shifting John McCann -- a former news-side columnist who has been covering N.C. Central -- to the UNC beat. He had been covering UNC a good bit in the interim since Harold Gutmann left.

Well, at least they made a hire. Congratulations to Brooke!

Also, Steve Wiseman is the sports editor, along with his Duke beat. The current preps editor, who was the interim SE is being moved back to news.

I wonder what the Sports Editor title entails when you're already assigned to a major beat

Jimmy was laid off in September 2013. Another change: Joe Johnson, who was laid off by The Herald-Sun a while ago but had been stringing for the paper, has been hired back full-time to write preps and colleges.

Now they've got a new sports editor. So why was Jimmy laid off in the first place?

Because the new one doesn't make any more than he did before he was named sports editor. He simply inherited the duties, on top of covering Duke.
