University of Kentucky beat, Louisville, KY

Discussion in 'Journalism Jobs' started by franticscribe, May 16, 2006.

  1. The Kernel gals aren't too bad either. But the dudes of Kentucky's ninth-largest newspaper rock the body that rocks the party.

  2. Once upon a time that statement was true, and it'll probably be true again considering the cyclical nature of talent at college papers. But the Kernel has beat the College Heights in overall competition each of the past two years at KPA and KIPA, maybe longer. The Kernel swept sports awards for the 04-05 school year I believe.
Plus, the Kernel does it daily.
    Take that, Hilltopper.

    THAT is the key.
The Kernel had to compete in state awards with a paper that came out like twice weekly. Sure, it's easy to put together great color packages and blowout centerpieces when you have three days to do it.
    FuckabunchaCollegeHeightsHerald.

Sorry, I don't want to hear any Kernel or CHH alum bitch about their lack of KIPA awards. </formercardinaleditorstillpissedafterallthesefuckingyears>

Both are great papers and great places to study journalism. There's no 1 and 2, it's more like 1 and 1A in Kentucky.

  5. However, The Cardinal, as lame as it is with cheering in the press box, etc., produced two outstanding journalists at the same time somehow in Jeff Duncan, The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune, and Mark Coomes, The C-J. But you're right, the Kernel and College Heights Herald both do a great job. It's just a rivalry thing, like UK-UofL.

Kernel > WKU's weekly. The end.

Back in my day, we had the bestest EIC and men's soccer beat writer. The co sports editors were cool, too. Just sayin.

So who's getting this C-J job? Still haven't heard anything substantive on that issue.

Wow, I didn't know that would draw such a passionate response. One final note ... the Herald uses all student produced product. Five pages of AP copy doesn't constitute a "student paper" to me.

I could eat "colon-produced product" for each meal. I don't. You?

The CHH is a nice little non-daily college paper.

But it's not the Kernel, the Independent Florida Alligator or anything along those lines.

The person who gets this job is the kind of person who's also getting offers to cover the NFL, MLB or NBA.

It's a great job, not just a good job.

2much - How do you think this job compares to the Fresno one?

Haven't been following the thread, don't know shit about Fresno or the Bee.

I would imagine you can make your mark on the Fresno State beat, but to me Kentucky and the SEC are at the proverbial next level.
