What does Fresno cover besides FSU?

I never cheered in the press box while I was there, as a sports writer or as the EIC. And I know most of my/our writers didn't.

  3. Sorry to lump the rest of you Cardinal guys in there with one fanboy, but a few years ago at the UK-UofL football game at the Slice one of the reporters from the Cardinal was cheering, not loudly, but the people sitting next to him could see it. And as I said, the Cardinal did produce Jeff Duncan and Mark Coomes.

From the little I know about the Bee, they venture into the Bay Area for various pro stuff. But they mostly stick to the Central Valley and cover the hell out of Fresno State and area preps.

I would doubt that the Bee would hire someone straight out of the school for the best/toughest beat in the department.

When do you think the C-J will want this person in place? And should we assume there may be a domino effect with other jobs opening up?

  6. Got one better than a college paper guy cheering. Saw a beat writer for UK clapping for Cameron Mills on several occasions. So it's not just college guys/gals, but some veteran reporters.

A guess: They would want somebody in place by late July so they could attend SEC Media Days and be ready to do all of the UK preseason/preview work. What that means in terms of an interview schedule, I don't know.

Didn't Billy Packer fist bump Patrick Sparks last year after his miraculous shot against Michigan State?

The Bee is an excellent section with an extremely impressive list of alumni: Prisbell, Passan, Andy Katz, Adrian Woj and John Canzano, to name a few. I've never worked there, but I've known people who have and they all say it's a great place, a paper that emphasizes quality. And they have a history of hiring young writers.

Actually, Sparks ran over in front of him and made some sort of gesture and maybe said something involving the f-word; I think it was based on Packer's call of the UK-Louisville game earlier in the year, when he said that Sparks traveled before drawing the foul that led to the eventual game-winning three free throws.

I thought about this. I was on the UK beat as a student reporter during the Cameron Mills years, so I can speak pretty authoritatively on this one. Lemme go through the print beat people who were on that beat at that time.

    Coomes/Mark Woods, Louisville: Never.
    Tipton, Lexington: Never.
Janet/Neal from Cincy: Never that I saw. I wasn't close with him. I know she wouldn't cheer for anyone.
    Mathis, Owensboro: Never.
Vaught, Danville: I wasn't close with him, though I would remember seeing him clap.
    Coomes, TCP: No way. Never.

So there you have it. I'm calling bullshit on this accusation.

  12. Well Mr. Ego, I mean Eko, you didn't list all the papers that cover Kentucky for one. And two, the one who was clapping you mentioned and that's no BULLSHIT since I was sitting right next to him. Guy is notorious for being a real suck up. You do the math.
