Indy's new publisher announced reorg, loss of nine positions. (That's about one loss for every day she's been on the job...) One high-end editor among cuts. No idea about others.

No cuts in sports. Nobody left to cut. Plenty of editors and a couple of reporters have left, but the last outside hire to replace was almost 3 years ago.
    Aforementioned high-end editor oversaw online.

The Star's new publisher being the immortal Karen Crotchfelt. Yes, it's juvenile to make fun of her name. Don't care.

It's sad how many/most(?) shops are down to the bare minimum and to put out a print product there absolutely can be no more cuts.
It's truly a horrible thing what has happened to the print product across the country. There's no way the online product will ever make money. If the model worked, then all these talented individuals who cover teams so much better than their low-paid replacements would be cashing in with their own websites.

My favorite thing in Gannett World is they're getting paid the bonuses but there's never one meeting where they don't say, "Our door is open if you have any IDEAS as to how to do things better." Really? Isn't that what your're getting paid the big bucks for? To come up with those ideas?

If its anything like other places, that door is open so they can then tell you why your suggestion to improve things sucks. I have yet to hear a suggestion offered by an employee and have it followed by a management type who says, "this could work." Usually it's, "Well, that's a very interesting idea, but..."

At the Gannett place I worked, I had one design idea that was pretty miniscule in the scheme of things. Nothing that would have radically changed the paper. Heck, it was just a design idea for about a 10 square-inch part of ONE PAGE.

It ended up taking six YEARS for them to implement it. Had several managers tell me it was a good idea. They'd take it up with upper management. Twice they had me design a prototype of the idea. They'd bring it to the big bosses. Nothing would get done, it'd get forgotten about for a year and a half, then it'd be, "Baron, you still got that prototype for your design?"

Well, I guess we'll be hearing this week that the furloughs and layoffs worked. And that we'll continue to do fuloughs and layoffs, because even though profits are up, they're still not as high as they'd like:

We have a meeting tomorrow with the big boss where I'm sure she's going to tell us just that. No thanks will be offered for the 6.5% pay cut we're enduring, I'm sure.

If the predicted snowstorm hits New Jersey on Wednesday, the same day the layoff announcements are scheduled, will Gannett HR call reporters at home to fire them? Or perhaps a bulk e-mail pink slip?
