If it happens it happens, but I don't think Mary Sue Coleman gains anything from coming out, saying the job is safe, and then firing the guy.

In fact, I seem to remember Mary Sue Coleman saying how great the University of Iowa was and how it was her dream job to be president of such a fine institution.

When the opening for U-M President came, she dumped Iowa City like a sack of potatoes.

By the looks of all of this, it sure looks like an inside job, like the "Friends of Lloyd" are having a major say.

I don't think Kelly is precluded from Michigan for those comments, for essentially leaving out the magic word "inner-city" as a qualifier, but I think it will be difficult for Notre Dame to hire him after shuttling broadcaster Paul Hornung for a similar slip of the tongue.

If I remember correctly, MSU turned Kelly down because they couldn't trust that he wouldn't leave and go to Michigan or another school.

MSU turned Kelly down because he was not a protege of George Perles or Nick Saban, an ironclad requirement for the head coaching job.

The "job-hopper" label on Kelly is spurious, once again planted by old-schoolers at both MSU and UM in the effort to chase an "insider" out of the running and clear the field for insider candidates.

Kelly has had three jobs in 19 seasons, and each time he moved it was for a significant upgrade. He's not like a Glen Mason, constantly trolling for lateral moves.

Christ, did I really need the blue font?

    But nice list of excuses.

    You need to read.

I wasn't the one who compared them. Mary Sue Coleman compared them in an article by the Wall St. Journal.

Oh and Starman, I don't consider Cincinatti two years ago to be an upgrade over CMU two years ago. Cincy was a slightly better team in a down conference. If Kelly were at CMU now the Chips would probably be undefeated, and in the top 15 or 20. No not as good as Cincy, but not far off. It was that move that surprised me. I always assumed he would leave, but I thought it would be for a Big 10/SEC/BIG 12 school.

Cincinnati is in the Big East, a HUGE upgrade over the MAC.

An undefeated team in the Big East can go to the BCS championship game. An undefeated team in the MAC can go to the, uhhhhh, Pizza Pizza Bowl. Plus, I am pretty sure UC pays its football coach about twice what CMU pays.

Cincinnati is a huge upgrade over CMU. Kelly would have been nuts to turn down the job.

Yep, Kelly makes $1.2 million at Cinci.

    Jones makes $275,000 at CMU.

And anyone who believes MSC is 100 percent behind DickRod is also nuts.

Actually an undefeated team from the MAC would go to Motor City Bowl or International Bowl, not the Pizza Bowl.

The Pizza Bowl is the Motor City Bowl now. Sponsors changed this year.

MAC Champion goes to Pizza Bowl or GMAC Bowl, alternating years.

International Bowl, which is usually played around Jan. 6-7 in Toronto to very little fanfare, gets the third place MAC team.
