Uh, where was the compliance office in all this? Two buildings away was a little too far to walk to check on your department's financial gravy train?

5 majors ain't minor. That's more severe than what the Notice alleged in the Kelvin Sampson phone-gate thing, and the aftermath of that ended up utterly decimating the IU basketball program beyond recognition.

I just find it odd how, when the NCAA decides to really flex its muscles these days, it's for things like a coach making too many phone calls or practicing for too long, when we all know there's MUCH more serious rulebreaking going on all across the country. Seems like they've no interest in going after the serious shit unless it gets handed to them on a silver platter with someone caught red-handed with the money spilling out of envelope (to use the 89 Kentucky example).

And they're making examples of programs that previously had long reputations for cleanliness and integrity (like IU bball and UM football), when nothing ever seems to come of allegations at programs where rampant rumors about shady shit have been flying for years (hello USC football). Don't get the NCAA at all.

Why the hell don't they just get it over with? Fire DickRod and hire Harbaugh. Now.

Oh, and the other night, a pro-U-M football rally was held in Ann Arbor. It was not sponsored by the school. Rah rah rah, sis boom bah. All in, everyone!

DickRod asked about what it took to be a "Michigan man," i.e. when would he be accepted for who he is? It isn't about wins and losses - it's about integrity. Bo Schembechler - a Miami (Ohio) grad and former OSU assistant coach - was about integrity.

I'll be interested to see what the compliance office fallout is. Either Judy Van Horn and Co. really screwed up, or they were told to shut up. Either way, that's huge.

Of course the Freep says it is major. ESPN does not say it is major. Detnews.com does not say it is major.

    Hmm.

While we are on the subject... what ever happened to the UCONN basketball issues? Do they not get probation?

I'll be honest, if Michigan gets probation for this and USC football and UConn basketball don't get probation, I will likely murder someone.

They almost have to. Head coaches aren't directly named in violations reports unless there's tons of evidence against them. Some flunky is almost always chosen to take the bullet.

And the pattern points right straight at Lack of Institutional Control.

AnnArbor.com is calling it major. Then again, The Ann Arbor News/AnnArbor.com had/has a reputation of not drinking the maize and blue Kool-Aid.

The report states that the violations are major unless noted as secondary. None of them are tagged secondary.
