Good point. But Stump Merrill still wants another shot in the bigs.

Kindred has a new piece out which lays out San Diego still further for their Sullivan atrocity . . .

Screamin' A. Smith -- who's been given more chances than Harold Stassen -- laughs.

It's now an "atrocity" when another highly paid journalist is laid off?

I applaud Creig for coming on here to defend his section, but ...

If it was an executive or corporate person who was on here or speaking out and implied (or inferred, I always get that wrong) that everything is going to be fine because they are going to fill those positions, and they've only lost 2 1/2 writing spots in the last 15 years or whatever, people would be lining up to tear them a new asshole. And rightly so.

This is far, far more than -2 columnists and +2 columnists = even. To pretend it's just about the numbers when you're losing people of the quality and the tenure of Bozich and Crawford, and hiring God knows who Gannett will be willing to pay for, is an insult to the intelligence of anyone paying attention.

    OK, one last time.

I was responding to comments that we are a shell of what we used to be. This was before Rick and Eric even left the building.

If you want to compare the C-J now to the C-J 15 years ago, there are lots of places you can point to and say it's not the same. But we have not laid off a sports writer in 15 years and we will get two strong talents to fill these jobs.

If anyone's intelligence was insulted, I apologize.

Just get a bunch of Citizen Journalists, i-Reporters, CellarBloggers, BleacherCreatures and other free community contributors, and all will be well. Find those hidden voices like "Scoop" suggests and that circulation will be staggering. SMH

There is not a single big paper out there that is not a mere shell of what it was 10-15 years ago...

None. Unfortunately, there is no exception to that rule.

Demographics don't do much for me, although there are minorities and women worth hiring in those roles.

If you're talking demographics, it should be someone with a passion for at least some of what the area has a passion for.

As for money, I mean, that's not a small paper. There'll be some money.

Probably true. And the way some of those big papers spent money and wasted resources, the bean counters were coming. They were coming.

I obviously have never discussed salaries with the columnists (past or present) but I wouldn't be overly confident on the size of the paper being related to the amount of pay.

Let's see, Gannett has had News2000 and mainstreaming initiatives, for what, 15 years now? And their papers are doing just fine, aren't they?
