No offense, YF, so please don't jump my shit. But that last sentence is pretty much perfect.

Seems like the million-dollar question in this case.

Their departure definitely will hurt the C-J. But will readers change their habits to the point where they will alter their browsing habits and go to the TV station's site regularly to see what they are saying? I'm sure some will, but I'm equally sure not all will.

I'm sure we all have our list of writers who rise to the level of "must read", to the point where we'll seek them out wherever they end up. But how long is that list? Not that my day is that packed or my time is that valuable, but I'm not willing to do the extra clicks and visit 3 or 4 or 8 different sites to visit all the different places where some of my favorite writers have spread out to.

I don't know the market, but do these two rise to that "must read" level in Louisville?

Bozich definitely does. Crawford, IMO, does as well, but to a lesser extent.

Why, because his (salient) points might make newspaper people cry?

If anyone can rip this post - besides, of course, the messenger - I'll be fascinated to hear it.

    What's his point again?

I agree. If you're going to start cutting bodies, that seems to be a logical starting point.

This won't be easy, but it will be easier to draw an audience now than it was in pre-Twitter days. Both presumably have a good following and can direct people right to their stories. Plus sportswriters seem to live for tetweeting their buddys' work, which can also expand the audience.

Except the C-J isn't cutting the position. And the columnists left of their own accord. And YF doesn't know what any of the traffic numbers really are.

I don't think anything is suspicious about it. The place that hired them wanted to make a splash. Safe to say mission accomplished.

If you have a signature columnist that person should be a pretty big draw. There aren't many left. I'd really have to think about it, but I'd be surprised if there are many more than 10 although there are probably another 10 who fall in the "debatable" category.

I'm talking someone like Plaschke, (although Simers would qualify as well...) or Paige, Albom, Ryan, Lupica... a guy who has been at the paper or the region a minimum of a decade and in most cases well beyond that...

    Bozich was that for Louisville.

I'd count Mark Bradley in Atlanta, Paul Daugherty in Cincinnati, among others.
