The (very slight) bane of my existence is that my answer to this in a general sense is often “no.” Because I’ve always had a relatively skimpy pop culture diet, I miss a wide swath of references and in-jokes. Most celebrity marketing campaigns are wasted on me.

 

I was watching TV with my parents when a car commercial came on and we had this exchange:

Mom: Should I know who that is?
Dad (oddly aggressively): NO!! Some nobody.
Me: That's Oscar-winner Brie Larson.

 

I had to look her up because I’d never heard of her even though she looked very vaguely familiar.

 

I was about to give you shit for not knowing her but I realized she just hasn’t had memorable roles save two: her Oscar (but you had to actually see an Oscar-bate movie) and Capt. Marvel. But you need to be into the Marvel movies. After that, the memorable roles are thin. At this point I almost recognize her more for the car commercials.

 

Never seen her in anything except the commercials. I don’t do superhero shows (The Boys excepted) and I couldn’t name her statue movie.

 

I spent about 25 years of my journalism career having to know everything there is to know about every celebrity on the planet...now, I relish in the fact I usually don't know the musical performer and I'm about 50/50 on the hosts for SNL. It's gloriously refreshing!

 

A shit-ton of Israeli travel ads on YouTube right now, portraying it as our quirky pal from a middle eastern paradise. Yeah, just one with a sketchy human rights record in Gaza. But… yeah… the beaches! (Piss off.)

Hey I had to ask someone who the guitar player with the funny hat was on those Geico commercials. Of course when someone told me I recognized the name but I'm just not a metal fan.

 

If you go far enough back in this thread, you find me utterly baffled by the Geico Ice T ads because I didn’t recognize him.
