Why did Gannett move out of Roslyn? I have been in their former buildings and they look fine. And they did Roslyn did have the advantage of being close to the Metro.

I think it's a safe assessment that when USA Today is done with its hires it will have the best sports staff of any newspaper in the nation.

  4. They didn't own those buildings.

I know I'm asking for it, but why not rehire them?

  6. They would have kept them if they wanted them.

Right. That's not a knock at any of the people who were bought out, but USA Today clearly went into this with a plan to get rid of certain people and use that money to hire an amazing staff. Please don't think I'm being insensitive to those who were let go, because that was exactly how my journalism career ended. It sucks, but it happens...

Far be it for me to applaud anything Gannett does, but look at this staff... Holy shit... and they're not even close to being done. They still haven't hired NFL and NBA writers and I'm not sure about baseball. I thought I remember hearing that they had hired a baseball writer, but I don't think I've seen anything since.

The big rumor is that they're going after a top line columnist. Based on the people they've gotten for the other jobs, I can't wait to see who it is.

Mizzou, what if anything have you heard about bloggers/blog writers? It seems like they're hiring blog editors as well... wonder if those positions are still open...

It's a pretty fucked up way to revamp a staff. The scary part is that this can happen at any shop.

I don't disagree, but I'd rather see this happen than see a paper just cut its staff by 40 percent and not hire anybody.

They're putting together a product that people are going to want to read and it's been a long time since a newspaper has done that.

Former USA Today writer Gary Graves named to AP position in Lexington: http://www.sacbee.com/2012/08/20/4742029/ap-names-gary-graves-sports-writer.html.

How many papers have this many people in sports? I don't think it can happen anywhere else.

And, yes, it's unfortunate for the people who lost their jobs. Never a good time for that, certainly not now.

But, if the management believed sports was doing a great job, it wouldn't have gone out and gotten Dave Morgan and company. And, if you're going to hire Morgan and say, "Take us to the top," you let him do it. I don't mean this to be insensitive or unsympathetic, so please don't take it that way, but would you hire a GM, tell him to win a championship and not let him change any coaches or players?
