Tossed this up to my boss, who's laying out the section tonight: Star-spangled sorrow. Not sure if he changed what he had written, of even if he had the space for it.

Because, POO, I have faith in the innate intelligence of this group to respond or not respond without getting all kerfluffled and confused, as you apparently might have been.

    Agreed.

We don't have a Sunday paper, but if we did, no wa I'd get away with "Ghana, Ghana, hey, hey, goodbye"

Attention, America! You can now resume ignoring international soccer

Now that the US is out, what will World Cup ratings sink to here? Even the NHL will show pity.
In a year, the vast majority of American fans will have brushed the loss to Ghana into the dustbin of sports, the score, the ultimate victor, even where it was played all having faded from the collective conscience.
A win would have gone a long way toward establishing soccer's legitimacy among American sports fans. A loss to Ghana — not England, not Germany, nor Argentina or Brazil or Spain — to Ghana will lead to another round of "oh, well" and interest in American international soccer competition will go into hibernation for the next 42 months.
