I just want to be clear on this: Are you saying you believe institutionalized racial disparities are part of a false narrative created by the left?

"I don't doubt that something happened to her that night," says the author of the piece, who went ahead and wrote it as a detailed horror film anyway.

Probably best to stay away from "the left" kind of statements here.

Between this thread and the Ferguson thread, this site is giving sj.cult a run for its money.

    Jackie, or the author?

Both, but especially the writer. Jackie possibly made up a crime. That's a dime a dozen. Happens all the time. Now, this was a big one that got a lot of attention. But Erdely is about to become Janet Cooke.

The thing she told the Post about how she wanted to write about a sexual assault at a major university, tried Harvard, Yale & Princeton, couldn't quite find one that fit, then settled on Virginia … wow.

I really don't think she's Cooke, who just made shit up. I do think what's going to happen is she took the account of a woman who was actually raped, but in a way that was not nearly as barbaric as the article states, and repeated it without enough critical analysis and further reporting. Why her editors didn't save her from her own naiveté in this is totally perplexing to me. Cooke's case was unique because she just invented it; I don't' think Earley would invent this. I just think she wanted to believe Jackie, and Jackie wanted to be believed, and Jackie wanted to tell a story that would speak to the emotional pain she went through, and now we're here.

Let's not let her off too easy here. She's been doing this for more than 20 years. Written lots of great pieces. Won lots of awards. I don't know that she's naive. She just didn't give a shit. She also lives in the Rolling Stone bubble/echo chamber, I imagine, where the audience was certain to applaud her work wildly. And it did, for a while. I don't imagine that Erdely ever figured it would be scrutinized. She's like the film critic who didn't know anyone who voted for Nixon.

She and Caleb need to get together for a burger and milk shake and celebrate their triumphs.

No. They were guilty, and their lawyer knew they were guilty, and he told this to Upton Sinclair:

But, Sinclair made heroes out of them anyway.
