Instead of becoming the 51st state, DC should just get folded into Virginia.

Maryland actually. Make it an independent city like Baltimore.

D.C. was originally a full diamond shape, but later returned the land on the west bank of the Potomac to Virginia.

 

You can't always get what you want.

 

Large chunks of Virginia would prefer to give the NOVA suburbs to D.C. than take on any more of that mess.

 

Maryland already has a very high crime rate. Giving them DC seems unfair.
Virginia has a low rate. It has the capacity to absorb additional crime.
So DC goes to Virginia.

 

Maryland is already the worst place on Earth. Adding D.C. couldn't possibly fuck it up anymore. Hence, D.C. goes to Maryland.

 

Then again, has Virginia ever been adequately punished for secession?

In a strong federal system, misery and general sh#ttiness should be spread equally across all states.
Maryland is already among the most miserable and sh#tty.
The people of Virginia are not bearing their fair share. They get DC.
