Vegas bound. Any ideas?

Ditto. Seriously cold beer, great cheap craps game out front and slots that actually paid out coins. Kids these days will never know what it was like to take a huge bucket of change to the cashier.

My first Vegas stay was at the Riv, learned craps at the old Silver City (RIP) next door.

I can report that I just looked out the windows along the Strip side of the place and Slots-a-Fun is still there.

    Still looking for waffles.

When I first started going to Vegas, it was the beers, the Slots-O-Fun hot dog, and that $0.99 shrimp cocktail.

Good memories of that dump. My guess is Slots O Fun is long gone.

    lol regarding waffles.

The 99-cent shrimp cocktail is still there, or at least it was last June.

After I revived this thread in January, I forgot to come back and mention where we chose to book.

Anyway, I ended up deciding that it was time to pony up for a ring and so I decided to spend a bit less on the room. We're staying at the Monte Carlo - but the hotel won't matter once my girlfriend finds the real reason we are going there. She thinks we are going for our birthdays (both in September).

I also took the suggestion of a board member and started playing "MyVegas" my girlfriend too.
I redeemed my rewards points for two lunch buffets at Aria, two dinner buffets at Aria and a $50 dinning credit at the Monte Carlo. My girlfriend redeemed her rewards for another $50 dinning credit at the Monte Carlo, a 3-hours of free drinks voucher at the Pub at Monte Carlo and a free buffet at Mandalay - since they have alcohol included. We also scored 2 free show tickets (going to see Cirque De Soliel Love) and got another $50 credit to eat at the Monte Carlo.

If you can't tell already, I really suggest playing the game. The comps are legit. We should also have some free entry into The Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay and free monorail passes by the time we go.

So thanks to the poster who turned me on to the game. It saved me hundreds in food costs for the weekend.

Loved the Pub at Monte Carlo, great beer selection, larcenous prices. Get all you can out of that three-hour free drinks voucher.

I have no idea about any game, but your words indicate that Monte Carlo is some second-rate place. It's not, it's fine. Not the Mandalay, but nothing to apologize about.

Agreed, absolutely nothing wrong with the Monte Carlo. The Huggy family had a great stay there two years ago.

Yeah, the Monte Carlo is just fine. Those beer prices at The Pub are outrageous, though.

Did enjoy a 2-for-1 happy hour there one afternoon.

We used to go to the Tropicana once or twice a year, then stopped during the remodel.
My brother tried it again last week. He called for a room rate, hoping for a comp or discount with his player card. They said the whole system is new and there is no carryover from the old player card system.
So he found an advertisement where they give you $200 slot credit for joining their new player program. He asked about that and they said, you're not new, you can't get that. And you haven't gambled here since 2009. Uh, if the whole system is new, how do you know that?
But he went there anyway. Once he got there, he saw more lighted signs in the casino to join their new player program: "The first $200's on us." So he inquired about it at the player card desk. This is how it works: After you've played (lost) $200, they give you a slot credit for $100 to keep you playing. And they also give you a $100 slot credit on your player account after 6 months that has to be redeemed within one year.
As for the remodel, he said it's not much. In the rooms, new window blinds and 37" flat screens and a plastic palm tree. Those plastic palm trees are spread around the building.
He said the coffee shop was a lot better than it used to be and they ate there a couple of times. But the upstairs restaurants were WAY overpriced.
While he was gambling, he ordered Makers Mark manhattans. He was told you have to pay for call drinks, including Jack Daniels. For bourbon cocktails, they only comp Jim Beam.
The Trop is and always has been a cheap-shit operation, trying to gouge every dollar out of you. They'll never see any of our money again.
