When in Vegas, I enjoy drinking heavily with prolonged episodes of gambling.

"Old Vegas" (Fremont St. area) has undergone a bit of a renaissance, particularly in the last year or so. Zappos shoes have their HQ in the area & have been driving a lot of the action. Well worth the visit. Good, reasonable eats, plenty of decent gambling. Well worth a visit. Have a beer at Main Street Station Casino & Brewery & take a leak on a hunk of the Berlin Wall (in the casino men's room). Play a hand or two at the El Cortez, raise one to the great Jackie Gaughan, who passed away yesterday. Hell of a guy (played a few hands of poker with him last year), lived quite the life. Check out the eats at the new Container Park. And, if you're into this sort of thing, HIGHLY recommend: http://themobmuseum.org/

Is the Las Vegas Club still there? When I was there a million years ago it had one of the largest private collections of baseball memorabilia anywhere.

I really enjoy playing at the Las Vegas Club. The tables are laid out in a more spacious manner and the smoke isn't too bad in the place. It is always one of the places I hit when I am in town.

Very good suggestions. I may make a trip out there one day. Thanks!

I stayed a night at the El Cortez when funds were low on the tail end of my last Vegas trip. It's like a Super 8 with a casino on the ground floor.

But it's super-cheap (about $40 a night for midweek) and easy walking distance to the rest of Fremont Street.

Speaking of Fremont Street, this is a cool place if you've got an afternoon to kill (though it turns into a dance club at night):

Also, go here for breakfast (though it will mean a cab ride if you don't have a car). Omelettes the size of a manhole cover:

We visited the downtown Mob Museum on our last visit. It was interesting and you can spend a few hours there.

Yeah, pretty much. Especially by myself.

I love the El Cortez. "Super 8 with a casino" is pretty accurate, but cheap and with really square games (single/double deck blackjack with good rules, I think 10x odds craps). The founder, Jackie Gaughan, died this week and every mogul in Vegas spoke lovingly of him.

I'm checking out Laughlin next week. Never been. Side trip to Lake Havasu. I was there for the grand opening of the bridge in 1971. Maybe another side trip to Hoover Dam. Been there, but wife hasn't.
Not looking for anything too exciting or extravagant. Kinda sounds like Laughlin.
    Any ideas??

Yes, closed in 2011. Going to re-open as the SLS later this year.
