    Did you ever consider Stateline?
Could be an option. Or Laughlin.

Yeah, if all the Strip joints are $300, Golden Nugget would be too. It's a Strip joint disguised as a downtown hotel.

I don't think the casino would be your style judging from your post, but I was really surprised at the El Cortez (downtown) tower rooms on my last trip. Outside of the smallish bathroom, the rest of the room was really big. And clean.

Anyone been to Laughlin? Always wondered if that was worth the drive.

  3. Thanks for all the help.

I decided to go with the Tropicana at $150/night. I'm a little concerned about what a few people said about it declining recently. As long as it's not gross (unclean bathrooms and linens) and doesn't have scuzzy people (meth heads, skanky people) since I'll be alone, I'm hoping it will be okay for one night.

I'm leaving in a few minutes. I'll follow up when I get back and let everybody know what I think.

    Again, thanks for the help.

If you find Red, White and Blue slots, play 'em!

You know, slots are for slotters.

I'm a 21 and poker sort of fella, though I'll put the occasional $20 spot on No. 12 on the roullette table; 12 seems to pop up often.

Laughlin is OK, though I haven't been there in a few years. Hotter there than Vegas during the summer, but you've got the river. And alternative is, as someone mentioned, staying in Stateline or Jean for cheap. Stateline is only 30 minutes from the Strip.

  7. Laughlin also skews older than Vegas. A lot of retirees there, mostly day-trippers from Phoenix.

The gambling there is decent and cheaper than Vegas, and indeed, there's the river. Good place to spend a day or two, but not any longer.

It's been several years since I stayed there, but Fitzgerald's downtown wasn't too bad. Not sure what they ask for on the weekend, but during the week I could always get a room for less than $50. And I never had a problem with the room.

Laughlin might be too much of a drive--almost 2 hours from Vegas, although the road has been four-laned since I last drove it.

Stateline is much cheaper, if price is EVERYTHING.

One kind piece of advice: do NOT eat at Fitzgerald's.

    Thank me later.

The good news: The Trop has a wonderful pool.

The bad news: The Trop is a dump.

The not-so-bad news: It's only a dump in relation to the mega-resorts that surround it.

Luxor is generally at the intersection of affordability and quality, though I read somewhere that they're ditching the Egypt theme. Might be kinda hard since the hotel is shaped like a pyramid and there's the giant Sphinx out front. But, whatever. TI is in a great location if you play poker (short walk to Venetian, Wynn, Caesars and Mirage, but a long stroll to Bellagio) plus they have a nice, albeit small, room there on site. TI is pricey, but it's still cheaper than emptying your savings account for Steve Wynn.

Too bad the Boardwalk closed. I miss playing with 50 cent chips. And be sure to visit O'Sheas. I think it meets your exact specifications.

    You've categorized the Trop, precisely.

The motel-like wings are quite dumpy.
