Walt Palmer, a dentist from Minnesota, and his bow and arrow are about to have an interesting week

I hear Walter Palmer also lured Yogi Bear out of Jellystone Park with a picnic basket filled with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches spiked with quaaludes and shot him while he slept.

He sometimes wears Yogi's jaunty cap to impress the ladies.

We did this, pretend-to-be-outraged-over-big-game-hunting, and try to ruin the life of the "hunter" thing, only a year ago:

I see now that I missed the joke. Should have realized that wasn't an animal from our lifetime.

So in addition to being obviously anti-creationist, are you against shooting protected lions but more against shaming someone for hobbies that include killing rare animals?

I can't speak for YF, but I am very much against Shaming Culture.

We'll be embarrassed by it 20 years from now.

Eh, shame all you want, but don't pretend that joining in the shaming makes you some wonderful person.

We're all going to be judged on our own actions, not our condemnation of others actions.

Plus, it's not like this story needs any more attention. It's all over the news, so a facebook rant isn't going to bring any additional attention to the matter, it's just a way of showing your friends that you care more than they do.

These "outrage of the week" episodes remind me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer didn't want to wear the AIDS ribbon.

Refusing to join in faux outrage or symbolic action isn't evidence of anything.

Eh. I wouldn't feel bad if his business was hurt so that he couldn't afford to jet around the country on faux hunting trips to kill rare animals.

Weirdly, if it hadn't been for the hunting, he might have lived a little longer. He got into two airplane crashes while on safari in Africa. They caused such damage (concussion, ruptured liver, spleen, etc. etc.) that it all supposedly brought on severe mental problems. Which led to electroshock therapy and from there on, to suicide by gun in 1961.

So, yeah, maybe the lions had the last laugh.

Still, with this dentist guy. You poach once, you're young, you laugh it off. You fly all the way to another country to poach, you've got a problem.

It wouldn't bother me if a client who was offended by this stopped going to him.

But, I don't think clients should be forced, by social media pressure, to stop going to him, for fear of being labeled a terrible person if they did keep using him as their dentist.

And, I don't think people who aren't clients should be harassing the guy, or his patients.
