So one guy based in Asheville has Type I diabetes, and you're going to paint an entire community with the broad brush based on one NYT story? Good grief, you're dense.

This happens in towns in Wyoming and Alaska, much less Asheville, N.C., or New York City. The Asheville Project had not one thing to do with that NYT story. Not a thing.

I had a dear friend that was a former colleague at my hometown paper move to Asheville a few months ago along with her husband and their wonderful young son. The place has soul, arts, culture, a diverse population and lots of other good stuff.

Because of its location in western NC, it also is subject to a little winter weather ... otherwise, it would be a great place for Jones to move himself and his family. My friend's husband teaches in the county schools there, a quality man who makes a good educational system there even better.

But you continue to paint your portrayal of a city and region on one story. That's a much easier way to rationalize your labels.

So, that quiz listed earlier told me I should move to DC.

What do you all think of our nation's capital?

As LJB would say, this thread is giving me diabetes.

My apologies to Jones and Pall and anyone else whom I might have offended - there was no blatant attempt to threadjack. But as you can clearly see, Boom wasn't here to make worthwhile suggestions.

    Please carry on.

No offense taken, Sam. I've had a few arguments with posters who easily write Southerners off as a bunch of inbred, uneducated hillbillies. Everyone knows Wisconsin leads the nation in that category.

Hey sam you are being a tad too sensitive about your precious Asheville. I spend at least a week a month in Iredell county which is just east of Asheville so I know the area well. The folks down there are not near as sensitive about their sweat tea as you are. They view the sweatness with a matter of pride.

If Jones needs a convenient airport your suggestion is not a good one since their are few direct flights out of Asheville to major cities. He would be better off in Winston Salem / Greensboro area with bigger airport.

Sorry, SC, forget that was your new state. Just taking an unprovoked shot at Packers fans.

It's not "my precious Asheville." But your repeat cheap shots aren't attacking the sensitive, they're just ignorant and signs of a bully that has to be pushing something around.

If Jones is going to move to that area, given transportation and availability of flights, he's better off in Raleigh.

If you make six figures and enjoy sitting in your car 4-6 hours a week, then it's the place for you.

Jones - here is a real view of Sam's beloved Asheville:

Asheville is a weird, weird place. Something out of a time warp or something. I moved here a few months back and had visited a number of times before doing so. I can honestly say that I never imagined this place was as weird as it is until it was too late and I was already here. I posted an older thread a couple of weeks ago and someone said that sometimes people don't really pay attention to the bad stuff in a town when they're getting ready to move there because they are excited about the move. When I first read it, I thought, "nah, that's not me." Reality, it was.

I come from NYC originally and was in S FL for a few years before coming here. This place is by far the freakiest and weirdest place I have ever been. It reminds me of a place called Nimbin in Australia that I went to once when travelling there. It's a freaky weird hippy colony where everyone is bugged out on LSD. Now I don't think Asheville is that bad, but it seems to be heading that way. Asheville is a trap. It's like you get here and you're almost sucked in to the way these people think....they all talk about art and writing and music and yet they really don't know what's going on in the real outside world. Most of what happens or goes on in Asheville is second rate, if that. It's like a bubble universe and so many think this bubble is the utopia of the universe.

I'm so tired of seeing people everyday that need a bath, stink and overall need a haircut and a shave. I can't say I know too much about the drug scene although it's obviously here.

Jcat is right. People who come here are really sitting back and looking at this place like it's some sort of freak show.....it's one of those things, sort of like a car wreck where you don't want to look, but something comes over you and you just have to.

I'll be leaving next month, back to where I came from. It has been a real eye opener for me here and I will be a stronger man to have lived here for a few months.....but I can honestly say I will NOT look back on this experience with fond memories.

What a freaky town this is........

PS.....San Francisco of the East? Paris of the South? Whoever coined these phrases must have worked for the Chamber of Commerce. This town is nothing like San Francisco or Paris. It doesn't even have as much class as Detroit. And Detroit is a dump.

I haven't read all this. I saw someone mentioned Richmond earlier and it is indeed a good place to live.
Much as I hate to say it, the Raleigh-Durham area might be a better choice if only because of the airport. At the paper, we'd often make the two-hour drive to RDU airport because the fares were that much better and the service was that much better.

I also like Tampa, Fla. I have a brother and a sister who have relocated to Sarasota and both love it. I suspect The Queen and I will live out our final days in the Sunshine State somewhere. Unless those days are like this week (and they may be for me after yesterday).
