Phoenix has Atlanta beaten by 100 feet. So does Oklahoma City.

Tucson sits at 2,300 feet, but it probably is not considered major.

Come on, who hasn't heard of the A Little Less Than Half-Mile High City?

atlanta sucks balls -- the only thing atlanta has going for it is its proximity to athens

Phoenix the only city even close to being a city as "major" as Atlanta.

    Dead. To. Me.

Seriously, Boone has four-year hippies*. Asheville's are there for a lifetime.

Except for Joshua, a homeless man who walks around King Street selling rocks. He could run for mayor and win, if only he had an address.

1,000 belated thank yous for the additional suggestions and PMs -- I still haven't gotten back to all of you, but I will. I've been occupied with a sick kid and a new baby and a story and various bullshit. But it's appreciated.

An interesting (for me, anyway) sidebar:

There's a show on called National Open House, where they take three cities across the country and take four price points -- say, $150K, $300K, $600K, and a million -- and show you the kinds of homes that you can get for that money in these three towns.

Anyway, one of the episodes I caught this week included three towns suggested on here: Asheville, NC; Portland, ME; and Missoula, MT. I know Missoula and Portland, but I haven't been to Asheville. All three looked great to me, and it was cool to see the different real estate levels in each -- and very tempting.

    So, the search continues.

Also, they had an episode with Louisville, KY. For $600,000, you can get a turn-of-the-century mansion of Millionaire's Row, 6,000 square feet, 6 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, fully restored -- with, get this -- a carriage house out back, the loft of which had been converted into a writer's retreat.

I was like, I'm not huge on Louisville, but I want to live in that fucking house.

I am in such a dangerous place right now.

    For that, again, thank you.

Thomas Wolfe has his roots in Asheville, Jones. That's good creative karma.

You'd look dashing in a white suit with a Weakerthans tee shirt, too.

An intermountain/northwest view - I'd stay away from Missoula, the surrounding mountains create an inversion (smog bowl) all winter. If you're into Montana and its long winters, check out Helena (or stay in Canada). As far as those types of towns go, Boise has them both beat with mild winters, long summers, a lot more people and plenty of recreation. Flagstaff is also awesome and close to some big cities. (one thing to look at is the average growing season. The longer it is, the shorter the winter)

If you're looking for something bigger, Portland, OR is a fantastic town, as is Boulder. Salt Lake is also beautiful with plenty of outdoor activities.

I'm a left coast guy, and my list would certainly include San Diego, San Fran, Portland and Seattle.

    Have you checked out Cleveland?

Question. Doesn't it rain in Portland and Seattle?
