My hometown of Charlottesville, Va., somewhat fits this bill. It's got all four seasons, it's pretty safe (never had any problems in my 18 years there), it's got bodies of water, though not any oceans, within a couple of hours (Lake Monticello is in town, Chesapeake Bay is a few hours, but everybody vacations in the Outer Banks, a six-hour drive to NC).

Schools are rated in the top 1000 or whatever by Newsweek, it's a college town (UVA) with lots of non-UVA people living in it, but it's not overrun by students. Many beautiful homes in your price range.

No pro teams, but UVA has plenty of sports-related success with certain sports. Not a particularly religious town (I'm Jewish).

Only drawback is the airport. Its in-town airport is fairly dinky http://www.gocho.com/ but it is 1:30 to Richmond International Airport, 2:10 to Dulles (huge), and 2:30 to Reagan National Airport (also huge).

Jones, I'm gonna PM you where I live. Please move to my town so I'll have some cool people to hang with.

    Jacksonville might fit the bill?

Buck is right Camden is lovely. They have some great old brownstones downtown. Just across the bridge from Philly. Very diverse culture and good government.

Too hot and humid most of the time for his ass. And other parts.

Huntsville, Ala., made the top 10? A little surprised. Nice town, cheap to live there, great schools, lots of smart people but painfully little to do for fun. I mean, the novelty of college hockey in the deep South can only go so far.

I love the Maymont Park/Hollywood Cemetary area, the James River rapids down by the Huguenot Bridge, and a club sandwich and cold beer from Phil's Continental Lounge ...

Just realized I'm probably going to leave Richmond without one last meal at Mary Angela's. A shame, I tell you.
