If Portland is thrown out there, I'd suggest living across the river in Vancouver, Wash., instead. There's no state income tax in Washington, and there's no sales tax in Oregon, giving you the best of both tax worlds.

Portland's great if you're very liberal and have and have a well-developed sense of entitlement. And you can call Idaho "back east."

Absolutely dead-on correct. There were a number of reasons why I didn't like living there, but the biggest one was that I've never spent time in a place with a higher percentage of assholes who thought they were the center of the universe.

That, and it rained so damn much I had mold growing inside my car.

So you never lived in NYC, Boston, LA, DC, Dallas or Miami either? ;D

  4. All I know about Portland and Seattle is that it rains A LOT. What is it like in December?

It didn't snow much when I was growing up in Seattle, but they had quite a few snowfalls this winter. Of course, a Seattle snowstorm and most folks' snowstorms are completely different things.
It really doesn't rain as much as everyone says, as far as amount is concerned.
It is just gray for a big swath of the year. That said. Both Portland and Seattle have amazing summers. Right around 85 degrees and it is just perfect. With oceans, rivers, lakes, mountains, rain forests, skiing, hiking, etc. right next door.
If you haven't visited either Seattle or Portland, you really should. Just a stunning part of the country.

Naples is a Plano with sun. Probably even more millionaires.

But with the Gulf instead of Lake Lavon.

And you can play PGA quality course for $25 during the summer.

In the year I lived in Portland there was one stretch when it rained 98 days out of 100.

The other two it was just overcast.

As for December... rain, mixed with freezing rain.

Seriously, fantastic place to visit. Terrific downtown with the greatest bookstore on Earth. Gorgeous scenery. Go there on vacation. Don't move there.

Not that I'm a fan, but does it say anything about Atlanta that we haven't seen much about it here?

And honestly, I don't know much about Portland. I just included it so Tom Petty wouldn't get pissy.
I think I saw freezing rain one time in the 18 years I spent in Seattle and you are right it rains a lot - as far as every day - but it generally mists or drizzles.
It isn't like it rains all day every day.

    Inky, I'd rather have Sanibel.
