Week 2 NFL thread

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by JackReacher, Sep 11, 2013.

  1. Besides the fact that he's black? No.
While I don't think that would have any bearing on the Rooney's... Fans, on the other hand ... Yea.

I apologize in advance when if this discussion goes off the rails.

I remember a national writer telling me that winning a title will buy a coach five years in the NFL and 10 years in college. Based on how long Fulmer lasted at Tennessee after he won a title and how long Lloyd Carr lasted at Michigan and how long Mack Brown is likely to be at Texas, that's pretty accurate.

Tomlin is six years removed from his last title. I think he's fine this year, but if the Steelers were bad next season, he could be in trouble.

  3. Another bad year next year I think would put him on the hot seat for 2015.
Cowher had a three-year stretch at the turn of the century. This is going to be year two for Tomlin.

I'm amazed Kiffin wasn't carried off the field last season.

How'd that work out for Gene Chizik?

That said, Tomlin is not going anywhere.

Yeah, Auburn is the exception to every rule. :D

Tomlin is a very smart guy, very able and his owners would recognize that better than anyone.
Gruden should have been fired in '04 and Tomlin promoted from within.

Tomlin is a very smart guy. He was nowhere close to being on the head coaching radar in 2004 and Gruden wasn't exactly in danger of being fired two years after winning a Super Bowl.

If Tomlin was fired (he's not going to be), there would be a bidding war to get him. The Steelers are one of the best franchises in the NFL and a big reason for that is that they don't have the coaching turnover that most teams do.

Before last night, Tomlin had never lost a game when he took the field with a losing record. In other words, until now, Tomlin has never been two games under .500.

Gruden owes his Super Bowl not only to Dungy, but to excellent assistant coaching, which included Tomlin.

Wasn't there some mini-deal about Dungy not taking Tomlin with him to Indy or was that when Tampa wouldn't let any of the assistants out of their contracts?

If Dungy hadn't been reluctant to fire Mike Shula as his offensive coordinator, he might have won a Super Bowl in Tampa.
