If you're referring to any constitutional issues, they can tell you what you can and can't shoot because it's a restriction on conduct, not speech. But once you get whatever you got (audio, video, footage, notes & quotes), they can't legally restrict your use of that material.

Federal (FOIA) or State sunshine laws may give reporters added access to certain things, however. A good example being the access to shoot the Florida re-count. I don't know of any law that gives a TV station a right of access to a school's football building, though.

This is really kind of an off-topic thing - but hastily drawn together press conferences are not the time to hash stuff like this out. I've participated in quarterly meetings with news orgs and people we cover, pios and such, and it is the best way to develop relationships and deal with coverage issues. They get to know you - you get to know them, they know where you're coming from - you know where they're coming from.
I know most teams/leagues/conferences have media days at the start of the year - might be a good time for beat people to meet with the SID (together) and outline expectations and clarify any changes they are proposing.

The whole thought process of sticking to your guns and letting him walk whereby you have NOTHING on the biggest story of the year so far in the state just doesn't even compute.
Does is suck sometimes to compromise? Yeah. But when the options are compromise or come out of the presser with nothing but your dick in you hand, then you get what you can get.

There is a reason why most ethics awards for journos are awarded to suddenly jobless journos.

I, for one, wish that every print reporter and every TV and web guy and gal would have just walked the hell out of the room as soon as any restrictions were even mentioned.

Then go on air, and in print, and explain that Tennessee was trying to be facist with restricting their ability to cover the news.

Yeah, tell me how that works out when you go back into the office. "What do we have of Kiffin?"
"Nothing. He didn't want to do exactly what I wanted, so I just left. I showed him. Go ahead and run the piece on the state bowling tournament."

I think you're spot on. This is one of those things that's really hard to anticipate and everyone just has to think on their feet and do the best they can in the situation. That's why it was so interesting to see.

You are aware that the telephone has been invented? You call your editor and hope that they have enough guts to back you up.

    Thank you.

And one thing to keep in mind: the more you smile and nod and agree to whatever the SID says, no matter how irrational and restrictive, the more irrelevant you become.

Or, I would have agreed to turn off the cameras, then when Kiffin begins his statement, leave them on. Shoot tape of him storming off.

I understand the principle, except no one would give a rat's ass except other journalists.

    This.

And is it me, or did the Tennessee SID come across as a total dick?

I can't wait to see Kiffin and his idiot minions try to pull this kind of crap in LA.
