Yes, I have the audacity to comment on this thread and offer my opinion that differs from what you think is so clear. Sorry it bothers you so much.

Ragu being a condescending windbag. There's something new. ::)

Yeah, the fact you commented was the issue. Not what you said or how you said it.

But I noticed you completely ignored the questions I posed.

Nope. Not what I'm saying at all.

Let me put this as simply as possible:

If I am at a news conference for an outgoing football coach, I am going to use my camera. I am not going to agree to some demand that I not videotape a new conference.

That's it. It's that simple. Getting into all of the permutations of ways to present it without the image gets away from the central point, which is that I am not going to let Lane Kiffin prevent me from doing my job. The douchebag here is Kiffin, and people may not like that the TV guy stood up to him, but you should at least try to understand why he did. If they tried to restrict the editorial content of the print guys, I would hope they would stand up for themselves, too.

For the sake of this argument, are you considering video of him speaking editorial content outside of the information actually provided? Because otherwise, everyone has the same access to the same editorial content.

And getting that content to our readers/viewers is our main job.

I don't think the TV producer was a d-bag. Not at all. I just don't think he was aware of the dynamics of the situation, and he wasn't aware of the consequences of what he was doing.

I don't hate the guy. I don't dislike the guy. I simply disagree with his actions, and I think he would, too, if he better understood the beat that drives everything in this region.

It's amazing that this is even a debate. I mean, don't you have to get the information? Plain and simple? Get it. If you get sound and no picture, fine. Just get it and figure out a way to present it to your audience. Just get it.

    Question
Really, PC, are you telling us that you NEVER interviewed someone off camera? If the guy wants to object, let him object but he should still be smart enough to know he's talking himself out what he wanted and what he needed. I disagree with Wes. I think he is a douchebag.

And TV did not get screwed out of this. They would have had the same access and info as print. Guess who got screwed - print.

    To touch on this point:

In this instance, you don't have a job, or assignment, in this case, if Kiffin doesn't decide to talk to you. It was his choice. He was under no obligation. So if you want in, you play by his rules.

Not to beat up the Tiger Woods hypothetical, but if Woods said he would hold a press conference at his home for credentialed media, but no cameras, still or video, were allowed on premises, would you go, or stick to your guns because there's no way Tiger is going to prevent you from doing your job?

It's a sad day when the image/video is more important than the content.
