and I just want to again ask why it would be impossible to get the vo/b-roll package. I know it isn't ideal. I know it's not what's wanted. but it's something. and then you have the platform to talk about why it was that way, which I think is actually more compelling television that watching him stand there and move his lips.

Wes, did your paper or the KNS plan to shoot video of the presser for the Web site? I'll hang up and listen.

Not saying it's a perfect ending.

Lane Kiffin has a right to decide whether he speaks, and for how long.

He does not have the right to tell me how I shoot that news conference.

well, no. he does have that right. you have the right to tell him to shove it, but he has every right to make whatever demand he wants to make.

It's not impossible to do it. I'm unwilling to do it. It's a shitty way to do it, and I'm not willing to let Kiffin decide that for me at the start of a news conference.

Clearly, this doesn't make sense to print people, and sorry. This is not a small point for TV. It's a different medium.

Everyone slags off my hypothetical, but someone care to tackle the root of my question? If Kiffin makes a demand on print that you find wholly unreasonable and restrictive, do you just go along with it? Substitute whatever restriction you want: no quotes, story placement, story has to appear in German, I don't care. Something you find insane. It restricts you, doesn't restrict TV. Do you cave to get the "more information," or do you stand your ground?

When everything that is going to be said in on the record, how is that restrictive to TV. Because you don't have his lips moving to the audio?

GB, I think it is very restrictive for TV. Kiffin was trying to put that restriction on the news conference for a reason. Video has impact. And he didn't want to risk coming off poorly in the medium that has the potential to impact the most people.

From their perspective, I can see just keeping the cameras rolling and seeing what you get, just as the print guys were hoping to just get him in the room and hope he started answering questions despite his conditions.

maybe the closest actual comparison is him saying to news guys no audio recorders - only note taking.

and in that instance, yeah, I sit there and shorthand it.

Except that it doesn't alter the final product, it just creates an annoyance for reporters.

From what I understood, this wasn;t a university-sponsored conference (like a monday Presser or post0game deal). It was Kiffin trying to explain why he was going and UT trying to help..
With that in mind (and keep in mind, I've had my share of these), under those circumstances is he not entitled to set the ground rules?
He could say forget it and then no one gets nothing, unlike a university or SEC mandated presser where he could get fined or sanctioned for not allowing it.

I don't think there is a straight analogy. That limits how you can do your job. Not what appears or how it appears. You're not giving away editorial control in any way, if you agree to take notes instead of recording (assuming that people know how to take accurate notes).
