Very few people said those two "wouldn't win in the SEC"
    Very few, as I remember.

Checked out the Knoxville vols site and aside from the comments from folks who seem to figure the more Kiffin screws up the better the Vols will be, you can see there are murmurs of unease on the banks of the Cumberland.

Many people said that the "gimmick spead offense" Meyer ran at Utah would never work against faster SEC defenses.

    Many, many people.

As for Pearl, the knock wasn't necessarily on him. Just that UT had been hibernating so long in hoops that nothing would wake it up, certainly not a reasonably successful coach from a mid-major.

Part of the problem, IMO, is the recruit he was gushing about on the radio (and even I know you can't mention recruits by name!) brings with him a cloud of pending-probation to whatever school he "chooses." Bryce Brown's handler would make Gov. Blago blush, what with the hinted demands he's made for years!

Hate to go a little inside baseball here, but this vol fanboy hopes Bryce Brown goes ahead and signs with The U, thus allowing Oku to choose UT.

This is not to be confused with the "cornholers of Red Stick"... which was an entirely different Parish altogether

Gets weirder for Kiffin as his former employer goes on the attack. Too bad the Raiders offense is not as offensive..

Man, this guy looks like a gigantic db (and I don't mean the poster who posts old news)

Covering him could be fun, though.

Which is more surprising in a retroactive sense, that Al Davis was apparently telling the truth about Lane Kiffin or that Jose Canseco was telling the truth about steroids?

  9. I'll bet Phil Fulmer is in a full-blown belly laugh mode over this whole scenario .. and he probably has a strong craving for a corn dog too.

Gotta love depositions. There's gonna be some good stuff when the two sides dump the transcripts on the media.

I'd argue that if Kiffin wasn't seen as a victim of Al Davis and the Raiders, he wouldn't have come close to the Vols job. He played it really well, looked like the doe-eyed innocent who was being undercut and undermined by Davis and was willing to buck the system. Kiffin really should probably cut his losses. Just because the Raiders are an inept organization, doesn't make Kiffin a good coach.

Gotta go with blitz here. As I recall, a vast majority of informed spectators thought that Meyer was a damn good hire for Florida. Plenty of folks thought that there would be a learning curve in adapting his gimmick spread offense to the SEC and there was. But Meyer quickly figured out that there's some shit you just can't run against DEs who run 4.4-4.5 forties and adjusted accordingly. I don't think many have been surprised by his success.

Lane Kiffin's problem is not just that he sounds cocky, brash, etc. a la Bruce Pearl. His problem is a lot of the things he says reflect fundamental misunderstandings of things that fall squarely within his job description.

    1. You don't accuse other coaches of cheating publicly. (SEC rule)
    2. You don't accuse other coaches of cheating publicly when what you allege he did was not against the rules. (NCAA rules)
    3. You don't talk shit to a high school kid who spurns you; you should be the grown up. (recruiting strategy)
    4. You don't write checks your football team can't cash. (surviving the SEC)

Lane, people aren't taking shots at you because you're cocky and they fear you. They're taking shots because they see all to well what's in store for you on the football field and you don't seem to have a clue.
