What's the difference in taste between single malt Scotch Whiskey and American Bourbon Whiskey?

Is one necessarily better or are they just different?

 

Bourbon is a lot easier to drink, if you're first getting into whiskey. It has to be at least 50 percent corn, so there is a sweetness to it. Scotch varies in flavor, largely by region, but even the less smoky stuff is not as accessible as bourbon. For me it's largely seasonal. Scotch is a winter pleasure. Bourbon season starts Derby weekend.

Probably the best entry into bourbon is through an elegantly made Old Fashioned. Just ice, sugar, bourbon, and an orange peel for the look and aroma. The percent front porch swing concoction.

 

Spent $18 on a pint of Founders Lizard of Koz for tonight. It's a blueberry, chocolate and vanilla stout. I'll report back.

 

I can't begin to describe the ways that sounds horrendous.

Makers

 

If you like Makers, have you ever had Weller? It's a whetted bourbon, too. A little hard to find, but about $10-15 cheaper.

The kicker is they also put out this 107-proof "Weller Antique" that is damn near a perfect bourbon. I'm not a huge wheated guy - too mild. But jacking up the proof did the trick. It tastes like Pappy.

 

Yep. Have a huge bottle of Antique at home. Awesome bourbon.
