It was hard for me to get through the final episode of S-Town, which I did today.

But as I finished it (and especially when I was on the last 2-3 episodes), I was wondering: what's the point? Is it just to tell this story of this hick who never got out of his hometown and all of the losers still stuck there? I needed some small-town corruption or a nice murder to make it have a point. Otherwise, it's just the meandering ravings of a dude who is smart enough to get out and never did.

Actually, yes, that does help. I ended up finishing episode 1 because I got stuck in traffic. John completely got on my nerves and based on the meh reactions to the series I've seen, I'm giving up on the rest. I'm usually a completist, but this sounds like a waste of time.

S-Town seems to be setting download records, which suggests it's a hit, but I wonder if anybody really likes it other than critics.

Almost done with episode 3. I thought 1 was really slow, and liked 2 better. Can't for the life of me figure out how they will milk 3+more episodes out of it. To me it feels more like an east coaster looking at Alabama through national geographic glasses. Twin peaks with less charm. Likely to have a similar let down at the end.

I think it depends on a person's sensibilities. The complaint you have about S-Town is the same one people had about the TV show Mad Men. There was no arc. There was no place it was going. It was just an account of a group of people over a period of time. It's how life actually plays out. I think piecing together meaning from that is harder than something more dramatic, but more rewarding. It's why some people can find everyday life meaningless and others glean great meaning while living that tedium.

Still in the middle, but for now it reminds me more of missing Richard Simmons, but with a subject we've never heard of before.

I've listened to two episodes of the Kurt Vonneguys.
Interested and frustrated at the same time.
Great topic, and it is causing me to think about novels I have not read in a long, long time.
    I love Vonnegut.

Frustrated by some of the 'insights.'
Some dumb stuff and current-day bias in perspective.
I shouldn't expect anything different from Cracked, but I'm growing very weary of pop-culture fetishists who constantly conflate popular entertainment with art.

    Please explain.
The music is original for the program, right? So who's Emily?

Nope. "A Rose For Emily" is a song by The Zombies from the album "Odessey and Oracle." The title comes from a short story by William Faulkner that John gives him to read.

Oh. That makes more sense. They keep thanking someone for original music during the credits.

Just subscribed to a podcast starting this week called "The Grift," which explores con artists and people who fall for them. Sounded interesting.
