What Should I Be Doing With My Newborn, Seriously

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by Pete Incaviglia, Mar 24, 2008.

I measured "small" throughout my pregnancy, and the doctors scheduled me for a lot of extra ultrasounds, especially in the final two months. I remember bitching/stressing about it to my mom who said to me, "How lucky are you? You get to see the little guy a lot more than most women do before they deliver. Enjoy it." And that kind of put things in perspective for me. She was right, and the anxiety faded as each appointment passed and everything went OK. Hopefully your wife will experience something similar. If not, Lugnuts, as usual, has good ideas.

    All the best. :)

Thanks for all the words...I just hope this week will go smooth and by Friday all will be well and she will stop stressing.
That said, she did text me this afternoon to say he was kicking more often and she felt better.

Well, we're back in the hospital.

We went in for her weekly ultrasound and he still has his cord wrapped twice. The difference was that there was "notching" in it and they didn't like the look of it.
They put Mrs. C. on a monitor in triage for 2 hours and in that time he had deceleration once. That was enough to scare the doctor into admitting her to the special care unit, where we are now.
She is still on the monitor and nothing new is going on.
The doc told us at 6 that they were preparing for a delivery (they had her on an IV and wouldn't let her eat or drink) during the afternoon, but since he did not have a 2nd deceleration, they backed off going that direction and she was allowed to have dinner.
Instead, she will stay overnight and they will continue to monitor her in the morning. From there, they will make a decision on what we do next.
They are pretty adamant on keeping him in until at least week 38 (she is at 34 wks, 3 days), but it's all up to what goes on with his cord.
Hella frustrating. I want him out just to be done with it...but I know every day in there is a battle won.

Not terrible news, but not fun also. They will re-assess on Monday, so she's here until then.
If he unwraps by then, she will be allowed to leave.
If he stays the same, she will have to stay for the week and be re-assessed on Monday, the 15th. At that point, she will be at 36 weeks and they may have her delivery via C-section. So it's all a wait-and-see situation.
The one positive of being in the hospital...lots and lots of pics! LOL
We got a great ultrasound of his face today. Good to see what he looks like...pretty damn cute IMHO. hehe

If it means anything, one of the babies from my birth group was born at 28 weeks and is doing fantastic. One of the sets of twins from my group entered the world at 34 weeks and they are doing great as well. I hope your wife is comfortable. I know being stuck in the hospital sucks.

34 weeks is really good.. I might prepare for a stay in the NICU for something... But making it this far is awesome. Your wife is to be commended!!!!!

Well, he's here! 5 lbs, 13 oz and other than a little low blood sugar which will keep him in NICU overnight, he's perfect! :)
Mom is fine, a bit sore from the C-section, but she got on her feet 5 hours after delivery to go see him.
Dad? Well, he could use a beer! :p

Soooo, time to start reading this whole thread and start learning about this parenting thing! Haha!

Congrats, Spike! I can't offer much advice, since I'm only four months into the journey myself, but my advice will at least be from recent experiences.

Checked into this thread on a whim to crack a joke about how Pete Incaviglia's newborn is probably a teen by now. Instead got caught up in the heartache and ups and downs for Spikechiquet over the last six weeks. So glad it turned out great. Congrats, spike.
