Love that film! Can easily watch multiple times, though the opening scene really is hilarious

Agreed. I was curled up on my couch in the fetal position for awhile after ending that movie. I have a soft spot for Kate Winslet and I think Freddie Highmore is one of, if not THE best, young actor working right now.

Way of the Gun was absolute shit.

UPChip ... great calls on Hotel Rwanda and Last King of Scotland. Forest Whitaker was amazing in Last King, doing a great job of portraying Amin's descent into parnoia and lunacy. And, for his part, James McAvoy is greatly underrated (mostly because of the job Whitaker did).

Another one that I don't think makes my top five but really stuck with me was House of Sand and Fog starring Ben Kingsley and Jennifer Connelly. Shohreh Aghdashloo, who later starred on a season of 24 and more recently appeared in Flashforward, was incredible.

last king of scotland is top 10 for me. you're right about mcavoy he was as good as it gets ... and yet whitaker wins the oscar. that's how good they were. at least mcavoy had that intense sex scene with the perfect piece of music.

That clip from Way of the Gun was WAY NSFW, BTW. Probably needs that notation.

    Oh, and it was unfunny.

Holy shit, you weren't kidding about the much-needed NSFW tag.

And while the NSFW language was funny, the way the clip ended certainly was not. Wow.

Didn't think I was alone in how unfunny that scene was. To each their own, I guess.

Haven't been to the movies much since I got married. Movie theaters are tranquilizers for the queen, and so is our DVD player.

But I'll give it a whirl.

Little Miss Sunshine was one of those movies that wasn't what I expected. It was frickin' hilarious and I watch it every time it comes on TV. Outstanding performances, outstanding storylines, outstanding movie.

Walk the Line. Johnny and June could not have played themselves better than Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon did. Did not sugarcoat Johnny Cash's dark side. Made me appreciate his music even more.

Ray. Jamie Foxx's performance was nothing short of brilliant. And like Walk the Line, Ray Charles' problems were not sugar coated.

The Passion of the Christ. Only two movies have ever left me rooted to my seat in a theater when they ended. One was Saving Private Ryan. This was the other.

    Others:
    Brokeback Mountain
    Juno
    Napoleon Dynamite
Rocky Balboa (simply because I had the lowest of expectations and it turned out to be the second best of the series)
    Miracle

  11. Read through this whole thread and was surprised to find that two of my favorites weren't mentioned until page 11.

Finding Neverland was tremendous and really solidified Depp's spot as one of my favorite actors of all time.

And I'm not sure if there's a movie that made me think more and sit riveted when I watched it than Hotel Rwanda. Don Cheadle's performance in that movie will stay with me for a long time.

Some others that have gotten no or little mention that I loved: Stranger Than Fiction, Cinderella Man, A Beautiful Mind, Closer, Good Night and Good Luck, Hustle and Flow, In the Valley of Elah.

i've tried watching cinderella man 3 times but been interrupted each time and haven't seen further than about the midway point.

    i liked closer.

looking thru movies i have ...

the brown bunny was really good because it was dark, and it didn't need that much dialogue to convey all the pain vincent gallo was portraying. (plus the hummer).

little children. disturbing in a good way.

coffee and cigarettes. every vignette is perfect, and you really can't beat the convo between iggy pop and tom waits.

let's go to prison. will arnett makes me laugh.

the notebook. exquisite for all the same reasons the bridges of madison county is exquisite: simple, gorgeous stories.
