When the Cameron Crazie is on press row

I'm surprised Duke's athletics deptartment didn't vet this guy before issuing a credential. Most places I've been around do, to avoid fanboys taking up space on press row.

Yeah, very surprising for a school like Duke. Of all the places I've been, Virginia Tech was the best at cutting this kind of shit out. They run that ship tight and clean. I'm highly impressed with the folks in Blacksburg.

Ah, getting a credential under false pretenses. A long (and usually unsuccessful) fanboy tradition.

I was once working an NBA game and just before tipoff, the media relations person (who happened to be sitting next to me) got a call that someone was asking for a credential, claiming to be from my paper. We decided to walk out to see who it was (I was really looking forward to saying "Hi, I'm from the Podunk Daily. Who are you?") but the person apparently realized his scam wasn't going to work and took off before we got to will call.

Someone once tried to get a credential to a rock concert using my name and publication. The person issuing the credential didn't just push every request through -- she actually did her homework, thought it was odd that a sports reporter would need a credential and called me at my office to confirm.

I thought it was particularly odd because you typically need photo identification when you pick your credential up. I'm not sure how that was going to work, and the guy never showed up to find out.

I think I've told this story here before, but it fits:

When I was SID at a mid-major, we typically had just a few media folks at most games. The one game each season against our in-state rival always brought out lots of media. I got a request from some guy who said he was working for a publication, but something just seemed sketchy. I called the SE at the publication, and when I mentioned the guy's name, he said, "What's he done now?"

So I left an envelope at will call with the guy's name on it, and inside was a nicely-typed note telling him that his request was denied because I had talked to the SE, and he was welcome to go to the box office and buy a ticket.
