Of course, but every good Red Sox fan knows enough to be paranoid whenever it seems to be over.

This morning, the Yanks are a half-game out of the A.L. East cellar. Is their season over before it started? The series against the Mets ends tonight, then three against Boston and three against the Angels. The Red Sox and Anaheim are both better than the Yankees right now. And beyond that, well...

Here's the thing I don't understand. Why are media people saying and/or writing that Clemens will come in and save the season? It's not like he's a cleanup hitter or someone who will play every day and drive in a ton of runs. He's a pitcher, for God's sake. At most, he'll appear every fifth day (maybe) and, while he gives the team a better chance of winning than the Rasner's or Karsten's or DeSalvo's, he'll get, what, maybe 30 chances to help. At best. It just isn't enough.

All of which doesn't mean I think Torre is gone, just that I think the team has had it.

And, by the way, when did Robinson Cano, become such an adventure in the field?

[I posted this on the mlb thread, but it seemed to fit better here]

How strange would it be to hear Jeter say, "Mr. Girardi ..."?

Steinbrenner needs to fight the urge to get rid of Torre. What's happened to the Yankees is simply not his fault. Under him, they've been so good so long that it's easy to think they were immune to ever having a bad year. But everybody -- everybody -- undergoes a rash of injuries at some point. When they happen to pitchers, there's really no amount of managing that can overcome it. Especially in that division. We're not talking about foremen on a ship yard here. Steinbrenner needs to just let his baseball people do as they see fit.

What nobody knows, novelist, is exactly who George's baseball people are, who he listens to and who makes major decisions ... one of his sons possibly, Randy Levine maybe, Brian Cashman ... and nobody knows for sure whether or not George is non compos mentis. (Is that the right spelling, I don't know?)

Maybe I've missed it. Does anyone really think Clemens can save that team?
