Where did you get in? Where were you rejected?

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by micropolitan guy, Dec 10, 2009.

  1. Got accepted to Texas, Texas A&M, Colorado State (the school I desperately wanted to go to but couldn't afford due to out-of-state tuition) and Texas Tech (my safety school). Ended up going to Texas A&M, where I was working news side when Bonfire collapsed and killed 12 students. With that in mind, I honestly can't say whether A&M was the right choice or not. Has it worked out? I don't know. I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up.

Back then they didn't give grades. They didn't want to harsh your mellow.

I believe grades are now optional.

That school's admissions get weird sometimes, I think. I got in there, and while I got no money, I did get put in some program for smart kids.

My sister, who is way smarter than me, got in, but got no money and no program for geeks.

    I'm still baffled.

As far as doing it all over again, that's a tough question.

From a career standpoint, yeah, I would love to go back, go to Penn, get a degree in something useful and then be rich for the rest of my life.

But then I don't meet my wife, have my kids, so on and so forth.

    Everything happens for a reason.

Accepted at UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, San Jose State, Carnegie Mellon (have no idea why I applied there other than they showed a bunch of interest in me and kept sending me stuff) and Cal State Fullerton, where I eventually ended up.

Accepted at Syracuse, provided I change my major out of Communications, since the program was impacted. Remember thinking that there's no way I'm going from SoCal to Siberia unless I can major in what I want to major in.

Took a visit to Cal and although I loved the area, didn't love the concept of 400-student classes, not knowing what a full prof was until I was a junior and didn't love the concept of having to major in History or Poli Sci because they didn't have a Comm program either.

Given the fact I didn't have much of a "college experience" at Fullerton and that my friends went to Cal, I probably should have gone there. I did , however, get a great education for pennies on the dollar.

    Oh well....

I applied in '83 and was accepted to Cal with a 3.7 and, how do I put this? -- subpar SATs. Back then, if you were in the top 10% of your class and had a GPA/SATs over a certain threshold, you got in. They had a graph crossing GPA and SATs, meaning if you had a GPA over a certain point (I believe it's 3.3), you basically could drool on your SATs and get in.

Those days are long past. If I applied to Cal with my credentials these days, they'd laugh my application out of the room.

And that's a story in itself that has fascinated me, especially with a high school junior. Why is it so much harder to get into schools these days?

Accepted: Ithaca, Syracuse, Miami (Fl), Ohio U, Loyola (Md), Univ of Maryland, USC (and I know there's a few others, but I'm blanking at the moment)

Rejected: This one's kind of funny - UNC-Chapel Hill. I actually got the rejection the day after I decided to go to Ithaca and I only would have gone there if I had gotten the full scholarship for which I applied. I somehow didn't even get into the school despite being well above the average scores for people accepted there.

And to answer Zeke's question, there's no way in a million years I'd change where I went. Thanks to my stipend, I was basically paid to go to school every semester. So I was able to save up while at school and also I don't think it would have been possible to find a better group of friends.
