I gotta respect DeCaprio. When I saw "Grape," I thought he was GREAT. When I saw "Titanic," I thought he sucked. He took a lot of shit for Titantic and could have turned bat-shit crazy (ala Britney), but he continues to make good movie after good movie. Every movie I've seen him in except Titantic and Man In The Iron Mask, I come away liking him and his performance despite myself.

I don't remember who won that year, but Norton could have won for his performance in American History X.

That was the year Benigni won and climbed all over the chairs. Terrible choice. Hanks should have won for Saving Private Ryan.

He got an honorary in 2003. This from IMDB:

When he was named the recipient of a Special Oscar for lifetime achievement in 2003, he originally intended to turn it down feeling that the lifetime award signaled the end of his career. He wrote the Academy a letter stating that he was "still in the game" and would like more time to "win the lovely bugger outright." It was only after the Academy informed him that they were bestowing the award on him whether he came to collect it or not that he relented.

I just had this conversation the other day. There's a lot of backlash, particularly male backlash, against guys like DiCaprio and Pitt because they're "pretty boys," but if you step back and look at the performances, both those guys act their ass off in just about every movie they've ever made.
