Dumbest all-time move I've ever seen a coach do in a championship game situation. People bitch about Grady Little, that was small-time compared to Green's fuck up.

Of course being a Viking-hater, I laughed my ass off and loved every minute of it! (Hi Rosie!)  :D

    That's so dense.

I can't believe none of this has sunk in.

TIPT, with the highest payroll in baseball, are the Yankees guaranteed to make the World Series this year? How about just making the playoffs?

Unless these things are guaranteed, spending the most money doesn't always mean you have the best team.

I will also throw this thought out there: When was the last time the Arizona Cardinals entered a season with expectations of winning the Super Bowl? What about the Vikings? How about the Dolphins? Maybe the Lions? Is this the Texans year?

I agree that the disparity in financial spending in baseball is off, but can you honestly say that the Kansas City Royals don't have the ability to spend more money? What about the Pirates? How can you argue that after being handed a brand new stadium by the taxpayers of that city and the increase in luxury tax money coming in that the Pirates cannot spend more money?

The Dodgers are in Los Angeles. Is this really a small market location? What about Toronto? Is that really a small market?

How is it that Detroit is a big market when they were spending all that money in hockey and then are labeled a small market when spending little in baseball?

You need a little history lesson, Zeke.
Things were different when the Twins won their Series.
Then along came Cablevision in 91 or 92 to pay the Yanks $55 million for a year's worth of TV games. I believe that was the figure. Anyway, it was so much more than anybody else was getting at the time (except for the Superstations, which was another story altogether) that it completely threw the balance of power to the Bronx. It was no coincidence the Yanks started winning about 3 years after that deal went into place, and the disparity has only grown larger since.
The only thing standing between the Cardinals and Super Bowl contention is competent management.
The Colts once were the joke of the league. Not any more. How about the Bengals?

TB, there were many things going on during that time. New management was in place. Steinbrenner was suspended from involvement. In short, you cannot pin down the Yankees winning based solely on a cable television deal. They didn't have the highest payroll in baseball at that time. I believe the Orioles held that crown.

As to teams going from crap to quality... How about the reversal of Tampa Bay? They were a joke, then they were not, and now they are back towards sinking. Have the Raiders been able to do anything?

The Angels used to be a joke in baseball. Their recent trip to the World Series was constantly marked by "This one's for the Cowboy" cries. Now, they are a legitimate contender year after year.

In either league, if you have the proper management in place, you will win.

    Nice sentiment.
Now, show me the figures that back that up. The only teams that win big in MLB are big-market, big-money teams. I showed you the figures on that a few pages back.
You're a soccer fan. So you have to be a smart guy. I would think your argument would be more involved that what you presented.

Ok, finally, some actual #'s. small sample size - someone else can do 2000, 01, 02
    http://asp.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/salaries/totalpayroll.aspx?year=2003

2005 MLB playoff teams (followed by payroll rank)
    NYY 1
    Boston 2
    Anaheim 17
    CW 20
    Atl 8
    Stl 10
    Houston 11
    SD 13

    2004 MLB playoff teams
    NYY 1
    Boston 2
    Anaheim 3
    Minn 19
    LA 6
    Atl 8
    Stl 9
    Houston 12

    2003 MLB playoff teams
    NYY 1
    Boston 6
    Minn 18
    Oak 23
    Atl 3
    SF 9
    Cubs 11
    Fla 25

    3 yr consensus
    24 playoff teams
playoff teams with total payroll 1-10: 14
Playoff teams with total payroll 11-20: 8
playoff teams with total payroll 21-30: 2 (both were in 2003)

Spending more = much, much greater chance at the playoffs. This much is clear. Still surprised this many people needed to see the #'s to understand the logic.

The silence from the peanut gallery, which has been piping in every 30 seconds on this thread, is deafening.

I'll be doing an NFL comparison soon ... got some work to finish up.
