Which sport's financial setup protects its fans and competitive balance better, NFL or MLB?

But how many of those teams are at a disadvantage because of crappy signings and bad deals in the past?

On the other hand, there are plenty of teams over $100 million in payroll (cough cough Cubs cough cough) that make plenty of mistakes and aren't necessarily guaranteed success.

The bottom line is MLB's system is much better than people give it credit to be, thanks to increased revenue sharing. They just have to work now on making sure all that shared revenue ends up in the hands of players, scouting, minor-league development, etc., instead of in owners' pockets.

  3. Not to mention, the NFL's hard salary cap makes it near impossible to keep a team together for more than 3-4 years. The Seinfeld joke of "rooting for laundry" has never been truer than in today's NFL.

It could also be that their owners could spend more but wish to pocket the money themselves instead of investing it in their teams. Twins owner Carl Pohlad is a multi-billionaire but won't open up his wallet. Hell, he was dying to be bought out by MLB when they tried to contract two teams before the last CBA.

He should dig into his pockets and operate at a loss because of where his team is located?

Why should fans care and spend their money if it's obvious that the owner doesn't and won't?

In the NFL, that logic works.

Been down this road many times, pubic tap, and the baseball sychopants refuse to listen to logic. they love the 'how many teams have made the playoffs?' logic, but look closer - of those teams making the playoffs, aren't the MAJORITY of them big spenders? I posted about this months ago ... dont have the exact #'s right now (entourage is on in 5), but in the last 5 years, something like 80% of the teams that are among the 10 biggest spenders have made the playoffs.

and hey, i dont fault the royals, pirates, d rays, etc ... if you can pocket $30 million and the sheep (fans) continue to come out and look at your shitty product WHY BOTHER? might as well pocket the money, right?

im not saying the NFL is the end all be all, but it's a level playing field, which is all you can ask for. i like the setup far better than baseball, but that's just me.

    That's exactly it.

The only way to force the owners to spend money is to set a cap.

I've never heard a logical reason why there isn't a cap. Why not just have everybody on the same page? If you want the NFL cap, fine. If you want the NBA cap (with the luxury tax stuff), that's fine too.

Just make it a LEVEL PLAYING FIELD.

And no, this doesn't make me a socialist.

    The Twins don't lose money.

When they get into their new stadium, they'll make a fortune.

But they don't, and haven't lost money.

Which is why Pohlad should spend some freaking money.

Hell, I think the Twins drew 120,000 this weekend for the Tiger series. Don't ever tell me they lose money.

And the NFL is full of mediocre teams. If that's true parity, I'll take baseball's system.
