Who are the GREAT sports editors?

Glenn Schwarz at my paper, the San Francisco Chronicle.

I have been am MLB beat writer for 20 years, with Glenn since 1996. I probably would have quit a long time ago if not for his patience, guidance and acumen. Worked for him in all since 1993 and still have not seen him raise his voice or upbraid an employee in public. Plus, he doesn't believe in meetings.!

Mike Harris at Richmond and Gerry Howard at Milwaukee are two of the better guys in the business.

Second the Harris nomination. And pretty much every other editor at a big paper in Virginia -- Jeff Gilbert, Doug Roberson, Steve DeShazo.

I'd be curious to hear why all these names make your lists of great sports editors - what makes a great boss a great boss?

We've had that thread about 3 times in the last six months. Search the back pages for it.

As for mine, he's one of the greatest human beings I've ever known. The "I'd run through a brick wall" cliche was written about him. And others here can attest.

I'd be remiss if I didn't take this opportunity to mention a fella named Bob Roe. One of the best editors of any kind anywhere. I won't out myself, but suffice to say that without him, I'd be nowhere.

Why thank you. Thank you very much.
I'll accept the "better guys" acclaim with as much grace and humility as I can muster and agree it applies to Mr. Howard as well.
    The difference?
He is a vet with a track record and I'm some newbie with less than a year in the hot seat, still trying to rebuild my staff. If in five years I can be mentioned in the same sentence as Mr. Howard, I will be thrilled.

I'm still feeling my way but I've always worked best for a guy who builds a "run through the wall for me because I'll do it for you" attitude. One of my former colleagues said of my predecessor: He may be a pain in the ass at times but he works as hard as the rest of us and doesn't ask us to do anything he wouldn't do.

If there's an SE around who has too many on staff, enjoy it. Most of us are working short and trying to find the best way to do it. A lot of times, it involves us jumping in and doing some of the work. On Sept. 8, Nextel Cup visits Richmond for the cutdown race. Virginia Tech is at LSU for a 9:15 p.m. start. We'll put out a 14-page regular section and an eight-page race section. I'll be in working a desk shift that night (and the two previous) as will senior editor Danny Finnegan. Deputy SE Steve Trosky will be out at the race track for two late nights.

I don't think there's any secret. At least I haven't been clued in yet. You work hard, your staff follows. I'd love to have two more desk people. I don't have them. So give me those hed specs and let's roll.

What, Trosky's not going to help out at the Shippensburg-Liberty game? Come on.
