One of the great fictional lines of all time.

Yes, they would ... they're trying to build a stadium and there are more people who remember two Rose Bowls in five years than recall his ugly departure or the fact that he's a middling, at best, game coach.

His departure was ugly? I thought he took the high road, even staying with the program through the Rose Bowl.

A friend of mine (you know who you are!) has long thought he'd be a great fit at Georgia Tech, given the offense he runs. I'd be surprised if he hasn't already fielded several phone calls.

Isn't South Carolina to Georgia Tech a backward move?

Doba firing to be announced at 4:30, according to the Seattle Times.

John L Smith, back to the Palouse on the other side of the border?

    Weaker conference.
Less media exposure, fighting off four pro teams.
Buried by your rival, whereas I think South Carolina is probably more of the "it" team in its state than Clemson.

I just can't see Tech folks opening up the wallet that wide to make it a worthwhile move.

I think you've nailed it with John L. The guy I have thought all along was Paul Wulff, who has done a helluva job at Eastern Washington. But the more I think about it the more I have to admit that Paul Wulff don't build stadiums. Gotta be John L. or Price ... but this is the AD who went out and grabbed Dick Bennett a few years ago.

I've covered Sugar Bowls, Indy Bowls, Liberty Bowls and yo mama's bowls.
I went to college somewhere, yes. And I love seeing that team win.
But I can be objective, too.
This talk of bad bowls and good bowls is horseshit to me. That's my opinion.
I was there when State beat A&M at Shreve and when Cutcliffe took over the Ole Miss program with win over TxTech.
We ate damn well as I remember. All the sliced prime rib and other meats and potatoes and BBQ ribs we wanted in the tent out back.
    From a major restaurant.
So think what you want, if you don't like what I say.
    Or cuss me.
But don't call me a fan-boy just to try and twist what I said.
    I meant what I said. A bowl's a bowl's a bowl.
Some are more high-impact than others. But more than half of college football's programs will sit on their asses at Christmas.

Maybe, but I'd guess the WSU fanbase won't be too happy about it, considering Smith's fiasco at Michigan State -- a school pretty comparable to WSU. (Although some of the reasons for Smith's disaster with Sparty are endemic to MSU, and MSU alone.)

Smith would be a lot easier sell at one level lower -- Colorado State, SMU, TCU, etc etc.

They will cheer the TDs and big plays and hope for a win, celebrating at the end if they get it.
I won't ask you to read the minds of thousands of Bama fans.
"Will they be happy?" They will enjoy themselves at casinos and eat at good restaurants or fast-food, depending on their budgets.
They will drink alcohol and be festive.
They will play the hand they are dealt and give Saban a few years to build the dynamo.
They will bitch and moan a bit, but won't outrightly insist on instant national recognition or make jokes on message boards about their plight.
They will leave that to opposing schools' message boards and boards where jaded, know-it-all media gather.

Wazzu fans remember John L. from his glory days at Idaho. They would be thrilled with this hire, I'm betting. And since I am one ...
