Who will be the coach?

Bad coaching can fuck up even the most unbelievable opportunities. How Texas managed to be so crappy for years under guys like McWilliams and Mackovic I'll never know. With the athletes they have access to in Louisiana and no meaningful competition for the top dog spot in the state, LSU will always be a great job. They seem to have learned not to give it to people like Curley Hallman and Gerry DiNardo.

No doubt. LSU is a great job. It is amazing though, that from their 1958 national championship year, they only won the SEC twice and shared the championship twice. Of course I guess that happens playing in the same conference as Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee.

    Hold on here.

First, DiNardo had some damn good seasons. He followed up Hallman's 5-6, 2-9, 5-6, 4-7 seasons with records of 7-4-1 (1995, Independence Bowl), 10-2 (1996, Peach) and 9-3 (1997, Independence). DiNardo regressed in seasons 4 and 5, presumably with his own recruits, but I think he showed that coaching wasn't the major issue in his regime. When he had talent, presumably Hallman's, he was able to win. (There were some decent seasons under Archer and Arsnparger in the '80s, but nothing spectacular.)

Second, LSU went from 1961 to 1987 without a 10-win season. It's not like this has been the bastion of greatness for the past half-century. That's not entirely a coaching deal.

Curley's a nice guy. He coaches the Muscle Shoals high school team now.

Bill Martin is looking really, really bad in all of this. Apparently, Miles' agent tried calling several times to find out if Michigan actually wanted Miles, and got no response...Martin was busy sailing in the Florida Keys.

Exactly. DiNardo was a pretty decent coach. And he started to turn the tide of blue-chippers leaving Louisiana to play at other schools, by landing Kevin Faulk. There was a great story in the Times-Pic 6 or 7 years ago how there were more New Orleans natives in the NFL per capita than any other city...and very few of them went to LSU. The subhead should have been "Why LSU had two winning seasons in the 1990s"

Or, you could be of the opinion that Martin did the right thing. After all, he asked LSU for permission to talk to Miles (and his agent) AFTER the SEC championship game. Maybe he honored that word.

Posted on the aforementioned link to Carty's column. This guy has his head buried somewhere:

If he did, he's a fool. LSU offers coaching jobs to anybody they want, any time they want (see Miles, 2004, and Saban, 1999 -- during the regular season), they don't give a jack shit if they have permission or not, why worry about whether LSU likes it or not, what are they gonna do, call the cops?

When you're swimming with the sharks, you can't play nice.

I thought it was English that got a second interview. Or maybe both English and DeBord did.

At one point after the Miles fiasco, Martin was considering Brady Hoke from Ball State.

Tyrone Nix pulls his name from consideration at Southern Miss.

That's odd. I would have thought that would have been a good fit for him. Guess he figures he would be better off as a defensive coordinator at South Carolina.
