Former UCLA coach Karl Dorrell is the latest sucker, er, candidate to be the Duke coach.

He will have the same looks if he moves over to Duke. He ain't winning there either.

Wow, the Pac-10 flameout gigs are getting worse and worse. Teevens goes to Dartmouth and if Dorrell goes to Duke, where's Dirk Koetter going to end up ... Arkansas?

In fairness to Teevens, he was at Dartmouth before, and he did OK there.

With a name that sounds kind of like Dick Cutter, he'll follow Nutt nicely.

  6. Rumor that is starting to go around: Bobby Petrino leaving the Falcons to go to Arkansas.

A variation on that rumor which has been bubbling for a couple weeks: Petrino is waiting to see if LSU opens up, if Miles elects to bolt to Michigan. Petrino, IIRC, was one of the prime contenders for the LSU job when Saban took off.

NFL firings/resignations may also shake up the candidate pools, with coordinators as well as head coaches shaking loose. Been reading some rumblings that Marvin Lewis is shaky in Cincinnati. He'd certainly be an interesting name for several of these openings.

Rumors are also flying that Petrino's agent is trying to get him in at Michigan, too.

Looks like it's Paul Wulff at Washington State.

At this point, nothing would surprise me.

But supposing both Petrino and Lewis (above) were in the mix, my bet is U-M would go with Lewis, who fits in better with the blood-and-guts defensive image the Old Blues like to have of themselves (even though it really hasn't been true for about a decade). Really, Lewis' HC resume isn't that impressive anymore -- three 8-8 seasons, the Super Bowl season counterbalanced by this year's dive into the dungeon -- but compared to DeBord and Brady Hoke, the "Michigan Men" who have crept, more or less by default, into the lead in public speculation, Lewis looks like a genetically-engineered clone of Vince Lombardi and Knute Rockne.

Which is what they shouldn't do. They need to go for Kelly and impelment the spread offense.

Kelly will only get -- hell, he'll only be interviewed for -- the job if Lloyd Carr is hauled out of Ann Arbor feet first in the next several weeks.

Jeebus, Lloyd Carr apparently doesn't like the idea that either Les Miles or Jim Harbaugh would be considered for the job -- if Kelly got a shot at it, the Carr cadre would go completely bat-shit crazy. It would be flat-out anarchy in Ann Arbor.
