Heavy smoke signals rising: Michigan going hard after Rich Rodriguez.

After last year's diddling with Bama, my guess is WVU tells him to go for it. If you want to leave that bad, then leave.

In the light of Rodriguez's huge buyout ($4M until Aug. 31, 2008), there's some talk U-M would name one of the current assistants as "interim" coach, with Rodriguez taking over on Sept. 1 (U-M has a game on 8/30), with the presumption WVU would probably fire him in the interim.

But if WVU could collect $4M by not firing him, why would they??

Perfect timing for Michigan, with many WVU fans still smarting from the Pitt loss and blaming Rodriguez for the team coming out flat. He's a fuckin' moron if he goes to Ann Arbor though. The guy's always gonna' get a ton of slack in Morgantown for taking the school to two BCS bowls in three years. Michigan? NOt so much.

When I saw the headline reading "Fedora," God as my witness, I thought "Why is Earle Bruce in the news?"

    Sometimes I love this business:

7:45 p.m.: DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke officials denied reports Friday the school has reached an agreement with Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe to take over as football coach.

9:05 p.m.: DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe was hired by Duke as its football coach Friday, The Associated Press has learned.

I don't think the Pitt game was totally Rodriguez's fault, but I do think a school like WVU isn't equipped to deal with RichRod's wandering eyes every year. Some people said that his dalliance with Alabama was the last time he could do that and have WVU try to keep him. That school just doesn't have the pockets to keep giving him raises every time he talks to another school. I've been a card-carrying member of the Rodriguez fan club for some time, but if he's not happy in Morgantown, then let him go.

And I agree that he's crazy to go to Michigan. It's just like John Beilein's situation there: He took over a team that had none of the players in place to execute his playing style. Are there any Pat Whites, Darius Reynauds or Noel Devines at Michigan? And who's to say they'll come if he tries to recruit them to Ann Arbor?

Duke is in a whizzing contest with ESPN as well. The WWL is reporting the same thing.

And, if he goes, Dick Fraudriguez leaves some lasting parting words from just last week, post-Pitt.

''The impact of your name being thrown about is sometimes a little overrated. It probably makes for a lot of angst among families, and we don't want that,'' he said. ''Sorry, but you all are stuck with me here.''

A Sabanesque lie, some might say. To which I'd point out, Rodriguez and Satan both grew up some 10 miles apart in the same county in north-central West Virginia. Draw your own conclusions.

Cutcliffe is a classy person and handled his AD- and Prez-inflicted woes at Ole Miss nicely.
I wish him nothing but the best in the biz. He always was approachable at Ole Miss and never tried to make asses out of reporters in pressers.
And has been mentioned earlier, this may be his end-around move to finally claim the Tennessee job should Fulmer resign or be fired in the next few years.
Good on-field luck to Cut. He'll need some luck to beat Bowden and the rest of the ACC heavyweights.
    Maybe he'll get some.

I love this Rich Rodriguez stuff every single year. It's always somewhere new he's talking to. What a piece of garbage. Just man up and be honest.

My gut still tells me Les Miles goes to Michigan instead though.

Man up and be honest? We have this from the AP

"I'm not going to address the rumors or anything of that nature," Rodriguez said [at a previously scheduled media availability Friday]. "If any questions are asked about that, the press conference will be over."

I love this fairly new stance by coaches such as R-Rod and Miles. He flies to Toledo to meet with the Michigan people, than has the gall to threaten reporters who have the funny notion that it's their job to ask him about Michigan.

If you don't want to field the questions, say no comment, and talk about Oklahoma's defense. Don't threaten guys for doing their job, especially when you've just returned from being courted.
