Who Will be the Next Coach at Notre Dame

Didn't Notre Dame run a good bit of option when Holtz was there?

  2. Weis or no Weis, Clausen and Tate ain't coming back.

And, yes, they ran almost exclusively option when they won the national title with Tony Rice at quarterback.

Unless ND is willing to give the next guy the same admissions deal that Holtz got there is no reason for any big-name college coach to even consider this job.

  4. Not an issue. They go after the kids they want to go after. That's a tired refrain. Notre Dame's academics help it more than it hurts.

Honestly, I think it goes beyond academics. It's the type of kid they recruit. Choir boys. You can find plenty of on-the-field hell-raisers with good grades, but Notre Dame doesn't attract those kids, because it has set itself up as a country club the last couple decades. The roots of that school, Rockne's days and Leahy's days and Parseghian's days, was as a kind of boys-will-be-boys place. I'm not advocating they go after criminals by any means. But nice guys finish last. Holtz had some sons of a gun on his teams, and now that Notre Dame has chosen to be a haven for 1500 SAT kids from posh suburbs, those kids, even the smart ones, don't quite feel like they fit in there.

Another statement of tired entitlement, that they can get who they want, like picking flowers from a garden. Baloney.

  6. Respond to what is written, not to what you expect to be written. I said they go after who they want to go after. They don't get them all, and I didn't say they did. They whiff on plenty of potential difference makers.

I'm having a difficult time figuring out what your stance is here.

  7. The bottom line is Charlie Weis failed because he's a shitty college football coach. Shitty leader. No overall vision for the program. Offensive grab-bagger. He didn't fail because of the "disadvantages" of coaching at Notre Dame. Other coaches, guys who may consider this job, know that.

Fail - ND's last National Championship was won in Holtz Veer option offense. So no a triple option offense is not beneath ND. Suggest you "You Tube" Tony Rice.

But they tried to lure some bigger name coaches the last two times they had an opening and they got turned down by them. I suppose luring Ty Willingham from Stanford was somewhat of a high-profile hire, but really is it?

They sure did. All the more reason Johnson would be a success.

But I don't think they'll go after Johnson because it isn't the right PR move. Sure, he may win the ACC Championship and the Orange Bowl this year, but he doesn't carry the same weight as Bob Stoops or Urban Meyer. So unless ND whiffs on one of those two, I don't think Johnson will be fielding any calls. Even then, I think they'd pursue Patterson or Kelly before him.

When Georgia Tech went after Paul Johnson, the groans could be heard from Atlanta. I thought it was a terrific hire.

Nice to be correct for once ...
