Who Will be the Next Coach at Notre Dame

    Mainly the Pope guy.

They're also not too hot about the supposed Catholic "worship" of the Virgin Mary (technically, it's "veneration" not "worship" but the evangelicals usually don't worry about that distinction).

Which probably wouldn't go over too well at The University of Notre Dame du Lac.

Plus Dungy is one of those kinda funny-colored fellas -- don't think for a minute that didn't have a little bit to do with Willingham's super-short leash and quick ouster. It'll be 30-40 more years before ND is ready to try one of them fellas again.

    Not evangelical.

    thanks for the info. Starman.

And, I think the alum of Notre Dame would hire a black lesbian if it meant they'd win a National title every year.

They probably would, but what African-American head coach can you think of who would be a slam-dunk?

Dungy hasn't coached in college in almost 30 years, and he didn't win the SB every year in the NFL. From all indications, he'd be very qualified, but he has plenty of potential drawbacks, too. He wouldn't be enough of a slam-dunk to outweigh those other negatives in the view of the ND fanbase. Remember, this is a bunch which is turning up its nose at Brian Kelly because 'he hasn't proven enough' yet.

I doubt Dungy would be very interested in ND for many of the same reasons.

I can't picture Dungy....or any successful NFL head coach going to ND, it's no longer the plum job it once was. I don't know why they wouldn't consider Brian Kelly a candidate, he's irish, went to a Jesuit Catholic High school....and a good coach. And, he's from Chelsea, so he could relate to the inner city kids he'd be trying to recruit.

Houston Nutt will say he's being courted, but it won't be true. It'll just be his massive ego.

The sad thing about the Notre Dame job is that a coach like Meyer would have to say something extremely offensive about Notre Dame for people to believe him when he says he's not interested.
Maybe he could sign a $50 million guarantee that he won't be the Notre Dame coach - he has to do something more to keep the distractions down and to make sure other teams don't use it against him during the recruiting period than just saying he's not interested.

Has ND retained a search firm?

Distractions? He could send his JV team to beat Florida State this week.

  9. That's very unfair. At one point, Weis had two black coordinators. Willingham proved after Notre Dame what a great college football coach he is. Willingham had a short leash for one reason: Urban Meyer. I think it's fair to bring the racial component into the discussion. This is America, after all, where it never lurks far from the surface. But the "them fellas" dig does not jive with the university that I know.

That being said - I do think, for various reasons, that Notre Dame is an uncomfortable place for black people, and I think it's done a poor job through the decades of extending its reach to African-Americans in the student body. They are woefully underrepresented.

Yeah, it wasn't until I moved South of the Mason-Dixon line that I ever heard the term "mackerel-snapper."

It was said to me in jest by a friend, but I didn't even get the reference.

I wouldn't rule out Urban Meyer just yet, no matter what he may say about it right now.

When he was at Utah, he said all along that he would remain at Utah until his kids graduated from high school. He said time after time that he wanted to keep his kids in school there and not move them around while they were adolescents and making friends.

Well we all know how that turned out now don't we?

Needless to say, Meyer is not a very popular guy in Utah these days.

Meyer has taken a step up every time he's lied to a school. That would not be the case were he to leave for Notre Dame.
