Because I also can't resist rubbernecking at really bad car wrecks I scanned the ND rivals.com messageboard last night expecting to see some of the finest fanboi batshit crazy posts in the history of the internet. I'm happy to report I was not in the least bit disappointed.

One guy even suggested they take a run at George Perles because they needed a disciplinarian as their head coach.

At that point I had to stop reading because I could hear my IQ dropping.

One point in favor: Perles could probably wear Weis's sweatshirts and windbreakers. The pants, maybe, if they were shortened 10 inches.

He is 75 years old and plans to run for Governor next year, unless he is coaching Notre Dame, Florida State or the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Have you noticed the way Cincinnati's defense has played lately? I'm not sure how much better Kelly has done in getting the right guys on defense.

That is not fair at all.

Kelly is only in his third year and he had to replace ten starters who were essentially three-year and four-year starters on the defense this season. The defense is ridiculously young.

What he has done this year has been nothing short of remarkable.

My favorite stat about him -- in 100+ years of football before he arrived, I think Cincy had one 10-win season. He's three-for-three.

How old is he now though? I'd think they'd want someone who can be there a long time -- especially after the last three guys.

Even Pantload managed to make a couple of
BCS dates (though with preferred treatment, I know) with those kids. Not since.

They were mostly Davie's kids. That's proveable. I could go through them player by player if I had time. Willingham was a horrible recruiter, at both Notre Dame and Washington. In 2007, the perfect storm of Weis' awful coaching and Willingham's awful talent led to a 3-9 abortion of a season.

You tell me that Notre Dame recruits are always "overrated" by the services. That's a cop-out. Willingham's "superior" recruits were always ranked very low by these services that supposedly hand Notre Dame recruits stars. So what gives?

You're trotting out tired excuses that don't hold up to scrutiny. Weis was a good recruiter and a bad coach. Just like Gerry Faust and Bob Davie.

I think that's fair. He landed some big-time DB's early, but could never land any defensive linemen. He landed the Te'o kid from Hawaii last year, but never consistently any play-making linebackers.

Remember, though, that a lot of the screw-loose guys that played on Holtz's national title team weren't Holtz academic exceptions. They were Faust guys. Zorich was a Holtz academic exception who now has a Notre Dame Law School degree to go along with his undergrad sheepskin. The linebackers on that team were all Faust recruits, and all half-nuts.

One of Holtz mantra's that has always resonated with me was his idea to get players into the right position -- ie take a slow linebacker and make them a fast defensive linemen. He used Zorich as an example.

Same philosophy that Paterno uses - a lot of kids have gone to Penn State as RB's that became great LB's

Agree . . . though I have this vague recollection that he had visions of Jim Kelly
as a LB.
