Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by YankeeFan, Nov 21, 2009.

  1. Even with coaches named after Popes.

Apparently Notre Dame has contacted the UConn coach (Edsall I think...).

I'm sure that one would thrill the boosters.

Well, if you can't beat him, hire him.

Although, that might make the list of potential hires unwieldy.....

They could do worse than Edsall. But I would certainly hope they could do better.

I still think Johnson is the way to go.

Randy Edsall has done a great job at UConn and would do well at ND ... except he's not a big enough name for the pompous Golden Domers.

I think the only way they get a big name coach is if they pry Jon Gruden away from ESPN.

The last thing Notre Dame needs is someone to come in and have everybody think the guy is the savior. If they bring in someone who is simply a good coach and can build the program they'll be much better off.

  8. The way people talk on here, though, Johnson would be a concession that they can't win national championships. That they are just going to try to be the plucky little engine that could, relying on their gimmickry to knock off the big dogs with the real talent. If that's not the case, I stand corrected, but that was kind of the insinuation - that Johnson can win with lesser talent because of his offense. I don't think Notre Dame is willing to concede they can't compete at that level, nor should they be. It might be "pompous," but this is a program with elite resources and it should be shooting to be the equivalent to Texas or Ohio State. That's not a pompous or unrealistic goal.

I'd be on the lookout for someone who coaches great defenses with lesser talent, because that's the side of the ball that Notre Dame has difficulty luring to campus.

  9. Yep. It's all about a good fit. The right guy at the right time in the right place. That's not just Notre Dame, either. It's across the board. I don't think Pete Carroll would be nearly as successful somewhere else, but he's the right guy at USC. Same with Mack Brown at Texas.

As soon as ND makes a hire, there will be people on here shouting from the mountain top either "Great hire!" or "Terrible hire!"

But the fact remains that the jury remains out until some games are actually played on the field. When Weis was hired, ND nation thought he was the second coming of Christ. Now those people (myself included) have their foots in their mouth.

At the same time, there have been coaches who were not popular hires at the time but they changed people's minds once their team hit the field.

After the Weis debacle, I've learned to put about as much stock into all the hype surrounding coaching hires as I do the NFL draft, which is very, very little.

I hope ND considers this in their search:

Don't go after someone just because of their name and because you're trying to impress everyone with your hire. Go after who you think has the best coaching style to fit your program. If he's not a big name with a big resume, that's okay. Because with just a little bit of success in South Bend, he will be a big name with a big resume in no time. I don't want to be impressed with the hire, I want to be impressed with the product come September.

Abortions for some, tiny American flags for others!

Irish Central says it will be Kelly.
