Because they're much, much bigger schools. And they're public.

My point was, there are other places that are hard to get into -- and hard to graduate from -- that play bigtime sports. Yankeefan's point is well taken, too.

And as a side note, I got into BC and Notre Dame, did not get into Stanford. For whatever that's worth.

  5. Well, OK, so it's not the University of Chicago. That's established. But it's a good school.

That being said, let's not us, or Brian Kelly, act like you need a 1400 SAT to play football there right now.

I think the exceptions is the hill you die on before you accept the ND job. At the very least, you get exceptions for kids with a good enough GPA/SAT, but who lack the core classes. Kelly needs to make his stand now, because once he accepts, he will get bupkus.

As layman said, I think you'd have an easier time getting them to be flexible on the SAT scores.

Besides, I don't think there are a lot of kids who took shit classes but aced the SAT's.

BC had a program that allowed some kids -- Jeremy Roenick was one, but he turned pro before ever playing a game -- to spend the summer prior to Freshman year on campus taking the classes that they lacked.

If they did well, they were able to continue on.

I don't think ND has a similar program -- unless you want to go to St. Joe's.

Football is a huge time commitment. if you're going to let someone in who's borderline -- or below -- academically, they should be required to be redshirted Freshman year.

Let them study, get situated, get their grades up, and if all goes well, let them play football years 2-5. But not a lot of stud athletes would want to take that deal.

ND already "flexes" on test scores for their athletes, and without going into all the institutional research, it's a fine idea. Same (to a more limited extent) on GPA (especially weighted GPA). That standard / exemption hasn't changed since it was eased in the Holtz years.

The core class units is the thing they can't / won't flex on (depending on your view). Again, it's a relatively small school (for a football "power") that simply doesn't have (and isn't willing to open the door to) the academic infrastructure to allow "short unit" students to play catch up. They HAVE to be ready to "go", right out of the blocks. They tried it 20 years ago...when, frankly, the high school instruction was better.....and it failed, in most cases. Zorich and Rice, notable exceptions.

When I talk about being the "hill you die on", that's the specific area I meant. It aisn't UC, and Kelly would make a mistake to over play his hand on core units. IMO, of course....

I'm not sure he should make it the hill he dies on, either. But if I were in his shoes, I'd say it's worth another million a year.

  10. Brian Kelly has called a team meeting one hour before the Cincy banquet tonight, and has banned media from the banquet. Meanwhile, Eric Hansen at the SB Tribune reports casual Friday canceled in the ND athletic office tomorrow.

Fellas, there's white puffs of smoke, I believe, emanating from the Golden Dome. They've got their man. Great hire, I believe. Best since Holtz.

I think he was the best they were going to get. Even so, I still think it's 50-50 it will work out.

I'm thinking out loud, but how much did ND gain in bargaining by floating the Edsall rumors?
