So the Mississippi State job is better than the ND job? Really?

So what's the top job then?
It isn't based on wins or losses, in my mind it is based on the team's following both regionally and nationally.
I admit, USC is up there. Texas and Florida would be on the short list as well.
After that, you have schools like some of the Big 10 schools like Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State, Oklahoma, maybe BYU, a couple of the SECs like a Tennessee and LSU. That's the next grouping.
But that's a sliding scale as you work your way down.

Everyone you mentioned except BYU is a better job right now than Notre Dame, including dysfunctional Michigan.

Just like what Jay said, it all depends on how you define "top job."

If it's shear success, than call it Florida. But if it's how big your fan base is from coast to coast, you'd be hard-pressed to find a school with a bigger national following than ND. Does it make it the sexiest job? Not necessarily, because you have to consider where the program is at right now.

USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, Ohio State: all better jobs than Notre Dame.

After 5 years of Charlie Tuna's flattop, the Irish definitely aren't leading in shear success.

...I'd say you could add Alabama and Georgia to that list. Maybe Auburn?

How about Petrino to Notre Dame? I bet he's thought about it.

Coaches at Goergia and Auburn aren't nearly as high-profile as coaches at ND. Maybe they have more talent to work with, maybe the local following is bigger and more intense (probably so) but the national following isn't even close to ND's.

I'm surprised Richt has lasted as long as he has without serious grumbling.

I'm shocked Bob Stoops hasn't been thrown about on this list after hinting that he would definitely be interested if they came calling.
