@21 This is not my first rodeo. I've covered and edited more than my share of abuse stories so yes, it is numbing to me.
@Poind As far as shock value goes to the people of the Delaware Valley, this was and remains shocking.

Drip could ruin a... no, not going to say it.

But, his unique brand of idiocy is really unwelcome on threads like this.

Drip is taking some heat on this thread, but I must admit I don't understand why OTHERS don't understand why this is such a shocking disappointment -- with the Santa Claus parallel only slight hyperbole -- to people who have been reading and following him since the early 1960s.

Yeah, to some of them, this IS that big. Why is that a far-fetched argument?

I guess I've never been invested in someone enough here serious allegations of this matter would give me one second on mixed emotions.

You did this? I'm over you. Right away. Fuck you. Die. You're scum.

No redeeming qualities will give me pause. I don't care if you're a good writer, a terrific coach, or a family member.

SF, there are some along here who wait for certain individuals to post and then all hell breaks loose. And don't let the person not be a card-carrying member in the cyber clique that has made this place what it is.
Getting back on topic, someone asked me about Conlin's present mental state and do I think he would harm himself. I don't think he would but...

Conlin's alleged comments about how "big" he is to the Daily News is, to me, one of the best by-products of the ever-changing media world. A few editors along the way decide that one of their writers is going to be a star and from that moment on, that indulged SOB sees himself differently, performs differently, gets special treatment and so on. The ones who don't are the exceptions and fairly remarkable, but too many from a generation or two began to think of themselves as bigger than the newspapers they worked for. They throw their clout around, cut corners, bully sources and so forth. They "become" their papers to a lot of the readers but they also become an embarrassment to a lot of their colleagues.

Now everybody's pushing their own little private brand. Media outlets have gotten comfortable distancing themselves from workers at the drop of a hat, so far fewer places will feel compromised by employing such an "institution" again.

You grew up in the 80's so you have no concept of how good he was. Conlin came out of Temple University to join the Bulletin. And since you weren't around, let me tell you that the Bulletin was arguably the best newspaper in town. When he went over to the Daily News, it was a surprising move but he did extremely well. He made a name for himself covering the Phillies and Major League Baseball.
When the decision was made to give the beat to a younger writer, Conlin did his best to become a columnist. He wasn't great at it, but Conlin's worst was better than many other's best.
The years of living and dying by what a person writes in a newspaper are over. Perhaps that may explain why you can't think of a single person "who would ever be crushed if they never read his stuff again."

Agree 100%. There are somethings I can't compartmentalize and this kind of action would be one of them.

Huh? Who the hell is thinking about Chris Hansen right now?

Sorry for the confusion. I'm referring to the fact that Hansen led people to panic over Internet stranger danger and perhaps lose focus on the more likely culprits.

    No problem. Clearer now.
