That is not uncommon at all in these cases. The abuse by the former mayor of Portland and governor of Oregon, that didn't surface in public until 30 years after the fact, although there was a private settlement about 15 years after the incident.

Plus - as we all know - victims of sexual abuse often keep it quiet.

Why would anyone guess? Not directed solely at you, Versatile, but stories such as these are too serious (and mysterious) for guesses and speculation before the facts are established.

And the guesses and speculation fuel the gossip that is exacerbated, and then the heated debate is running wild again.

Nothing is certain in the early hours of huge scandals. That's where restraint must be exercised.

    Such an ugly story.

And the victims say they were motivated to come forward now in part because of memories stirred up by the Sandusky story. I wonder how often that is happening around the country

  7. Excuse me for the basic questions but A) was Conlin at the Daily News in the 70's and B) does Conlin have any kids?

    B. It's in the story that the niece came forward when she went to Conlin's wife's funeral and Conlin talked about his grandchildren and she feared for their safety.

But when Conlin's wife, Irma, died in 2009, Blanchet decided to attend the funeral. Conlin gave the eulogy and made reference to the couple's grandchildren. Blanchet, who did not know her uncle had grandchildren, said she began to worry about the children's safety, and decided to tell some of her relatives what her uncle had done to her.

Very strong story. Unassailable with the comments from relatives who were adults and knew about it at the time it happened. Conlin can't be prosecuted and can't repair his reputation. Ditch the lawyer, give up and live out the last miserable days with the shades drawn.

Jeez. If that's the watered down story, I'd hate to see the original.
